Braves Meeting with Lester

According to a mAjor league source the Red Sox offer to Jon Lester falls into $110-$120 range over six years.

$20M per year is at least a somewhat doable number for the Braves. I still think that money would be better spent on a position player, unless Hart plans on trading away pitching to acquire a position player.

Sign Lester!! Wood for Marte!! Teheran for Bryant!! Sign Masterson!! Win the WS!!

Would you rather give Lester somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$100MM or J. Upton somewhere in the neighborhood of ~$200M? We haven't talked about Justin's FA value on here very much, but I suppose it isn't outside of the realm of possibility he gets somewhere around (or slightly south) of that figure.

Upton—and the answer's still easy.

Age; recent history; status as position player; short- and long-term needs of the team—all these factors conspire to make Upton a much better option as a $20-million per annum player for Atlanta, even if the deal is four years longer.

Really don't want to give a 30+ year old pitcher 20 million. Would have rather given 22-24 to Heyward.

I doubt the Braves go more than 16-18 with him.

Agreed, i dont see us signing him though.

In the unlikelyhood he somehow did sign, i'd question not ponying up for Jason.

Only thing that would worry me about giving that kind of contract to Justin is the slight concern that he might have the same eye problems as big brother in the next few years. I really think that's the biggest thing wrong with BJ right now - he can't see.

I think his biggest problem is he has a long loopy swing and isn't very good at baseball.

I would do 6/110 for Lester. But I'd rather do 7/120 or 7/140 for J-Up (if he'd accept that). I guess it all depends on how much we have to offer. If we don't have the money to sign Upton either, then I could live with Lester for 6/110.

They have room for both with Uggla off the books next year.

Still dont seem Lester was realistic.

Agreed, I'd prefer to pony up for Upton considering our lack of offense. However if Lester accepted 18-19 per year we could probably afford both imo.

For the Braves and our current budget constraints, rather not give anyone 200 million unless they are named Trout, Miggy, or Stanton.

It would be a stretch to sign both Lester and Justin Upton. Signing both would imply moving guys like Minor and Gattis as they get expensive.

Trade Minor and BJ for a prospect (just need to unload his money). Trade Justin, Carpenter, and Davidson to Seattle for Alex Jackson, Kyle Seager, and Taijuan Walker. Trade Graham and Pena for John Jaso and some cash. Sign Lester, Torii Hunter, and Bonifacio.

Lester
Teheran
Wood
Miller
Walker

LF - Gattis
CF - Bonifacio
RF - Hunter
3B - Seager
2B - Peraza
1B - Freeman
SS - Simmons
C - Bethancourt

Johnson (can spell Seager and Freeman against tough lefties), Jaso (can get a lot of at-bats against righties), Cunningham, Gosselin, and Terdoslavich.

Kimbrel
Simmons
Vizcaino
Russell
Varvaro
Avilan

Dalyn, I'm up here in Seattle. Kyle Seager is going nowhere. He's their Chipper. Your deal's a little rich on the M's give up, anyway. Here's a friendly amendment - Brad Miller is a LH bat who will break out next year. The M's prefer Taylor's defense at short, but Miller plays a solid short, would be a deluxe 3B and has power. He hit about .108 first two months last year which wrecked his season before he figured it out (mechanical flaw). Hit well over .300 at every level of the minors.

As I mentioned on another thread, if you can get the Mariners to bite on Upton, the young pitcher to get is Paxton, not Walker. Paxton is lefthanded, hits 96 with sink and is just generally filthy. Walker's had some shoulder stuff, too.

Incidentally, when talking about Seattle prospects or players, weird things happen because Jack Z is kind of - well, eccentric. Some say stupid. But he's building something up there, and I am certain he'd go long for Upton.

I think the Braves should not be allowed to sign FA to contracts longer than 3 years.

Extensions yes. But not a good history with FA and big deals.
