Braves Meeting with Lester

Damn if Lester was really serious about being here.

Even more baffling trading Heyward so quick, as if we would have gotten Lester I would have taken my chances with this current team in 2015 with a few tweaks.

Probably still do the TLS trade, find a platoon parter to go with CJ, and find a taker for BJ.

Was Lester even the right move? I think the worst thing that can happen is to get caught inbetween competing and rebuilding. We should be committing one way or another.

With our current players, a rebuild would be incredibly easy and pretty quick. We have lots of talent to trade and plenty to hold onto to be honest... just make a decision and stop screwing around. This is annoying!

I can't believe the team can look at Freeman, Heyward, Justin, Gattis, Simmons, Kimbrel, Teheran, Minor, Wood, Walden, Russell, and Hale and decide THAT needs destroyed and NOT built around. It's nearly half the roster. And you can keep players like Johnson (lefties) and Bethancourt (defense) and have less than half the roster to tweak. This counts even more if you can grab a guy like Lester to lead the team. Wow. Even after trading Heyward there was an opening to build a playoff team around the youngest core in baseball.

I'm more than fine not committing a 120+ million over 6-7 years for a 31 year old lefty. Especially considering he just had a career year and his previous three years make him look more like a good to very good pitcher instead of the ace he was this year.

I actually think the FO got impatient with this core. Yep, the youngest core of players in the league. They thought Heyward, Simmons, Gattis, etc. would put it all together more quickly than they did, when in reality it rarely happens like that with young guys. It didn't all come together, but it easily still could at any time with that talent and that amount of young guys. In fact, I'd say almost none of it came together, and if 1-3 of the guys did what they're capable of, we're talking differently right now.

Heyward had tremendous value regardless of his offense and Gattis had a better season than last year. He improved in just about every way possible. Simmons took a step back, but like Heyward he has tremendous value regardless of his offense. Bad leadership played a huge part. And they didn't fix that at all.

To me it means Lester would prefer to play here if the money was roughly equal to other offers. And the Braves have obviously had interest in Lester in the past. But the Braves are rebuilding and signing an aging pitcher to a long term deal doesn't fit that plan.

He's not aging but if the goal is 2017 then he's right but i think we can "compete" for a playoff spot in 2016 with the right moves.

Do you guys think John Hart is going to go on a show like that and tell you exactly what the Braves are doing. Until Lester signs with someone else I wouldn't get my panties in a wad. And I don't believe for one minute they intend to keep Justin Upton at the start of the season. Let's wait to see what happens.

I was holding out hope for Lester, but at 6 years it doesn't make sense to invest in a 31 year old pitcher at $20M plus per year. We have to take a look at every option like Lester and Tomas, but it needs to be a situation where you put a value on a player, and if it exceeds that value then you pass, or in some cases trade away the player.

It was a core with no chemistry, with no leadership, with no real fire or heart. To paraphrase Jack Nicholson in Batman: This team needs an enema.
