BRAVES OPENING DAY ROSTER

Best wishes to 2015 underdog success story (to a point), Jake Brigham. Made his MLB debut for Braves at age 27, had two more cups of coffee, but could not cut it. Since released, he has now signed on to play in Japan with Rakuten Golden Eagles.\

Another former Braves, Erik Cordier, has signed with Orix. BTW, Eric's father was a regular poster/lurker here during his son's time with the Braves. Had a nice private chat with him.
 
Besides Freddie and Julio, we're not going to break camp with a single guy who was a Brave before last season. That's pretty stunning.

Only 11 of the 40-man roster was anywhere in the Braves organization at the time of the Heyward trade a year ago. That's pretty crazy. And outside of Teheran and Freeman, those guys are:

Mauricio Cabrera
Brandon Cunniff
Matt Marksberry
Williams Perez
Shae Simmons
Ryan Weber
Daniel Castro
Adonis Garcia
Joey Terdoslavich

And 3 of our current top 20 prospects were in the system at that point. That is unbelievable turnover.
 
Two recent big leaguers have been signed to minor league contracts, according to MLBTR.

The Braves have signed former Reds starter David Holmberg, reports Baseball America’s Matt Eddy. Holmberg, 24, has thrown 62 major league innings over 12 starts and two relief appearances. He has a 6.24 ERA with 4.79 K/9 and 5.08 BB/9. He made seven starts in 2014, six in 2015.

Atlanta also acquired reliever Ethan Martin, 26. The former Phillies swingman flashed decent stuff with command problems in the majors, leading to a 5.93 ERA, 10.43 K/9, and 5.93 BB/9 in 44 innings. He was in 15 games, eight starts, in 2013. He hails from Toccoa, Georgia.
 
Ryne Harper, who two years ago might have been the best reliever in the Braves' system, gets a new lease on life as he was sent to the Mariners to complete the Jose Ramirez deal. Harper was 6-3, 1.79 with 11 saves for Mississippi two seasons ago, and followed that with a solid 2014. But 2015 was a big setback, as he was well enough to only throw 35 innings all years.

His brother, Reed Harper, is still in the Braves' farm system. He's a shortstop.
 
Added lefty Alex Torres to non-roster invitee list. Young, wild lefty. Could be lightning in a bottle.
 
On the MiLB roster front, noticed that Sean Newcomb has been assigned to AAA. A little surprised to see this, given that he has a combined 101 IP in A+ and AA. Below are the roster assignments for notable pitching prospects so far.

AAA: Blair, Newcomb
AA: Sims, Ellis, Bird, Thurman, Janas

Gant, Jenkins, Foltynewicz, Weber, Perez, Volstad, Kendrick / Chacin are also options for AAA assuming they don't make the big club.

I think these are bookkeeping assignments. The real assignments take place at the end of spring training.

Yeah, good point. Could go either way I guess. It's probably inconsequential, but I just wouldn't want to risk giving false hope to one of our top prospects for no reason if there's a chance he'll start in AA.

A YES network blog indicated that he finished 2014 playing in the Mexican League, and was out of organized baseball in 2015. No injury cause has been cited, although he had a nagging hamsting problem in his 2014 camp.
