Braves sign Jason Grilli

Hypothetically, what would Kimbrel be worth if he was traded?

*Let me be clear to everyone, I don't think this is going to happen, nor do I want it to

Well here are some trades of closers:

- The Tigers gave up Jake Thompson and Corey Knebel for Soria. So let's start there and go up.
- The Red Sox gave up Josh Reddick + others for Andrew Bailey
- The Angels gave up Taylor Lindsey, Jose Rondon, R.J. Alvarez and Elliot Morris for Street
- The Diamondbacks gave up Matt Davidson for Addison Reed
- The Phillies gave up Michael Bourn and some detritus for Brad Lidge

So those are the starting points, but then adjust those packages up since Kimbrel is better than any of those guys.

Man, Grilli being 38 makes me feel old. Just seems like yesterday when he was a top starting prospect. Dude had a lot of hype around him as a prospect. Glad he was able to reinvent himself and be successful as a reliever. I personally like the deal. It makes our bullpen better.

He also had a lot to live up to as well, with people assuming he got to where he was because of his father. So I'm sure he put a lot of pressure on himself trying to make a name for himself.

So we don't have a pitcher to get left handed bats out? Russell is better against right hander batters anyways. Is he the only left handed option we have?

His splits last year were an obvious anomaly if you look at his career stats. He's been better against lefties the rest of his career.

You feel old? I remember when his dad pitched in the big leagues. That's how old I am.

Kimbrel and Gattis for Profar, Mazara, Rua, Williams, and Thompson maybe?

Because apparently Heyward and Carpenter wouldn't get you Miller and Jenkins.

(How is it that no one understands that Walden (as the "throw-in") was included because Hart told them they could have their pick of guys in our pen not named Simmons or Shreve and he's the guy they chose?)

Because it's more likely that the Braves just didn't want to pay Walden.

Hart is trying to see if he can sneak into the playoffs these next two years like the Royals did last season. Build a great pen and a strong rotation. The Royals were awful offensively and they got to the world series because they just got hot offensively at the right time. I would argue that our offense this year will be better than the Royals was last season or at least as good. And the pen and rotation could be just as good if Simmons is ready to go.

I'm telling you don't give up on this team the next couple of years.

Our pen isn't anywhere near the Royals. They may have had the best pen in history.

Last year our pen was fine. Kimbrel is the man and we had solid arms in Carp, Walden, Vavaro to get to him. (Avilan struggled)

This year, I'm not sure that it's any better, it's just older and more expensive. I don't have anything really against the move for Grilli, but they trade guys that are due raises but, then sign older guys to contracts over a million. I think it was JS that would have like 1-2 guys in the pen that made over a million. You can build a pen very cheap and for a rebuilding team, why not just go with some young guys?

Essentially replaced Vavaro and Walden for Jim Johnson and Jason Grilli........upgrade? Possibly, but I would be concerned about a 38 year old arm if the goal is to spin him off.

I just don't see a well constructed plan by Hart.

@JonHeymanCBS: ever-improved jays prioritizing closer. looking at trades 1st, then will consider free agents.

Hey look... A team that would probably overpay for a closer. If only we had one to give them...

Daniel Norris, Max Pentecost, and Roberto Osuna/Richard Urena/Dwight Smith Jr. maybe?

I think it's rather clear moving Vavaro was mostly to clear a 40 man spot. And Walden had little to do with money. He was our 2nd best reliever/set up man. He was hardly a throw in.

I think it's clear the Braves signed Grilli and Johnson with the knowledge that they would hold more value at the deadline than your typical middle reliever because they have closing experience. Good experience at that.

I'd hate to trade Kimbrel but if Norris plus is the return I would be ecstatic. Especially if we got their speedy CFer Davis with him.

I see a lot of potential in the young guys. Vizcaino, Shreve and Simmons could be pretty intriguing in that pen. I think if it's going to be like the Royals pen then these 3 guys are the ones I think Hart hopes step up. Grilli and maybe Johnson just add some really solid depth back there. They will hopefully help keep everyone fresh.

Braves got guys back for Varvaro and Walden. Braves see more value in having both Grilli and Kurcz rather than just Varvaro.

Still though it does seem like there's an impending trade coming. Maybe the Astros wanted one of the Braves young closers to be willing to take on Upton's contract. Suddenly now you can reasonably throw Simmons into a Gattis deal to help you move CJ or BJ.

Im not lukewarm on their system, what they got?

I'm not opposed to Grilli in principle. I don't like the years, I don't like the dollars, and I don't like the lack of plausible upside. Yes, he closed with some success in 2013 -- but he lost that job, was traded, and ended up posting pretty mediocre numbers in 2014. Could the Braves get a 'palatable' prospect in exchange for him eventually? Possibly, but not probably. You've got age and dollars to consider. There's virtually no room for growth here.

Why not take a look at Mike Adams, Chris Perez, Matt Beslise? There is a plethora of intriguing FA bullpen arms still up for grabs with tons of potential value. Grilli is just a perplexing addition.

I don't fully buy into the mentorship argument because the Braves bullpen is not exactly comprised of spring chickens. Grilli is no Billy Wagner to Craig Kimbrel.

To me, this is an unnecessary move -- but then again I've been baffled by the incompetence displayed by the new regime this entire offseason.

We had nearly 20 mil to play with, should Hart of sat on that money and done nothing with it?

Also Grilli had an ERA in the mid 2's once he got traded to LA, so wrong.

At what point does Hart take all this money he now has and address an offense that he has largely gutted?
