Braves sign Jason Grilli

Hypothetically, what would Kimbrel be worth if he was traded?

*Let me be clear to everyone, I don't think this is going to happen, nor do I want it to

It would depend on when and how such a trade came about. For example, let's just say Kimbrel is having a dominate season as usual and a WS contender loses their closer. That sort of situation could set-up a desperation move where a team offers up a lot more than they would usually. But I won't get into players and such because I am not hoping to trade Kimbrel.

This answer is absolutely spot on! Thank you!!

Sure, you're welcome. I will add that Nick Castellanos from Detroit would not get it done for me, not even close in fact.

Speaking of Castellanos, he had a -30 DRS (Defensive Runs Saved) at third last season. That makes CJ's DRS last season at third not look so bad, lol. Further, that was the worst by any player at any position. Cabrera never reached even -20 Runs Saved at the position for Detroit and we'd all agree he was very bad there too.

I agree on both parts. With that being said, Castellanos does have Major League as well as Minor League experience in LF...

Right, but if he is going to be a good one it will be with his bat because even his defense in left is lacking. Of course I'll take that over terrible defense at third any day. :)

Haha me too.. but 1.) Kimbrel isn't going to be traded 2.) don't see the Tigers as a good match in terms of what they have to offer (they certainly could use a good closer, especially since Joe Nathan is only under contract thru this coming season) and their farm system is pretty bare.

Honestly don't know what I think of this just yet. If he can stay healthy, could wind up being a solid move. Don't know about the years and money. Would probably rather just hang on to the money, since we're not going to have an offense.

So we don't have a pitcher to get left handed bats out? Russell is better against right hander batters anyways. Is he the only left handed option we have?

I guess we'll be losing a lot of games 2-1, 1-0 and 0-(-1) this year if our young rotation performs well.

Based on those scenarios, we actually won the first two scenarios but third I suppose means losing in extras with a pitcher leaving with an arm injury because of Fredi?

Count me as a fan of this move. I'm a big fan as it is, but I think he'll be really effective back in the NL. It wasn't a lot of money either.

I would imagine it's been difficult to go from: a set-up guy to closer to back to set-up. Now that he's had a year to get back into the set-up role, I too think he will be very effective and a move back to the NL can only improve on his numbers from last year, that's for sure.

I'm not opposed to Grilli in principle. I don't like the years, I don't like the dollars, and I don't like the lack of plausible upside. Yes, he closed with some success in 2013 -- but he lost that job, was traded, and ended up posting pretty mediocre numbers in 2014. Could the Braves get a 'palatable' prospect in exchange for him eventually? Possibly, but not probably. You've got age and dollars to consider. There's virtually no room for growth here.

Why not take a look at Mike Adams, Chris Perez, Matt Beslise? There is a plethora of intriguing FA bullpen arms still up for grabs with tons of potential value. Grilli is just a perplexing addition.

I don't fully buy into the mentorship argument because the Braves bullpen is not exactly comprised of spring chickens. Grilli is no Billy Wagner to Craig Kimbrel.

To me, this is an unnecessary move -- but then again I've been baffled by the incompetence displayed by the new regime this entire offseason.
