Braves trade CJ for Swisher, Bourn, $$$

Maybin is absolutely expendable. Yes. IF you replace him with an upgrade in center or left. That hasn’t happened yet.

Based on his past and more recent performance, I disagree. In the same period where he completely crashed, Bourn caught fire. .176 .222 .200 .422 vs .327 .373 .382 .755

If you add the 10,000,000 to the Indians side of the ledger instead of just subtracting from the Braves, then the money does just about even out.

Weird trade that I don't really understand, but good to see Mike B back. Dude should have never left.

Weird trade, it makes Maybin expendable to an extent but you cant give him away.

Wouldnt be surprised if they kept Bourn and cut Swisher.

Good riddance, CJ.

Remember all that debate about re-signing Bourn vs singing BJ? Both contracts ended up pretty badly

I think everybody on this board would have taken Bourn in retrospect, on the basis of production and contract. Clearly the lesser of two evils.

Didn't realize that was happening. Bourn sure does run hot and cold, doesn't he?

Well, Bourn is clearly the best player in the trade and I prefer him him to Maybin, especially if he can neutralize his low lows.

However, this trade, like most of the rest of the Johns' trades, aren't about baseball, but about clearing cap space. For all we know they're gonna let Bourn and Swisher sell peanuts and pay them $29m so we have more space in 2017.

We're gonna be, like, the Starship Enterprise in 2017. With jet packs and ****.

Obviously, but it means we basically take all of the money owed CJ and lump it all in for 2016. Which obviously frees up more for 2017, but it also means it will be extremely hard to put a competitive team on the field for next year...which, again, is strange after getting Olivera.

It's not a horrible deal, just kind of a weird one. I would honestly rather have CJ's bad but at least manageable salary for both 2016 and 2017 than to have a really bad salary for next year and nothing for 2017. Some may feel differently, but this is weird to me.

I mean, if they wanted to clear CJ's salary in 2016, they could have just escrowed it in 2016 and reached the same ending point.

I guess they really wanted him gone. Swisher is done and Bourn just takes at bats from other CFs.

I think that's the plan. This is not just about unloading Johnson. The team wanted Bourn.

I think the plan was to get rid of CJ anyway possible while not eating more money than they had too. I think they are hoping for anything they can get out of Bourn. Would not be surprised to see us just cut Swisher

Only problem is the FA market reeks in 2017 which is why alot on here would like one big splash this winter or at least go after some of the top guys.

I wouldn't assume anything. For all that we know, jet packs will end up being the right sci-fi trope at the wrong time.

Really happy with this. Using 2015-2016 money to clear the $10m owed to CJ after 2016 is the right move for this team. Also, I've been nervous that Gomes would be retained in 2016 for his veteran guile, and I think that ship officially sailed today. Gomes is just too redundant with Swisher on an NL team.
