Braves Trade Deadline Rumors

If we had Lohse, Teheran would've been two starts deep on this season (most likely). We wouldn't have to concern ourselves with his innings (and he would most likely be pitching his best heading into the playoffs). And we wouldn't have to trade for Peavy or anyone else. We also could have Wood pitch a game or three to give Beachy the time he needs. No rushing.

Don't be stupid. No team in their right mind is going to sign a guy like Lohse to a multi yr deal when their rotation is already set.

We had JT, Meds, Minor, Maholm, and Huddy. Not to mention Beachy ready by August, and Wood, Graham, and Gilmartin at the upper levels of the minors.

To say we had no depth is a straight lie.

I dunno. In hindsight, maybe it's easy to say that, considering the almost unprecedented good health of the starting five (until the other day) and JT's outstanding work. I don't know if that was such an easy conclusion to draw several months ago.

Wood had a good spring, but I don't know that he was being counted on to be able to slot in so soon. Beachy is still something of a question mark. I was really concerned with rotation depth at the beginning of the year, even as a believer in JT. It's unusual to go this far into the season without at least one injury in the rotation.

I'm not saying I'd have signed Lohse, just that rotation depth was a legit concern.

I agree that starting pitching depth was a concern heading into the season. But if we want a proper accounting of the situation in spring training, Gilmartin, Hale and Graham should be mentioned as among the options that were available at the time. All three went on to suffer injuries that slowed their development. However, the starting five in the majors all stayed healthy until Hudson's injury, so the injuries in the minors never became an issue. And of course, Wood did develop rapidly. So one of the four who we were looking at for depth in spring training stayed healthy and developed rapidly. I think we took a small gamble with starting pitching depth at the start of this year and it has turned out ok so far. Going forward, I think a lot will turn on whether Beachy is able to regain something close to his pre-TJ form.

In most cases TJ people tend to pitch better than they had before for some reason and then regress after the euphoria.

I don't like any of the options available and the cost. With our lead I'd like to see us try to use internal options. I think if we give ppl a chance that we can improve the bullpen. Maybe a change to the bullpen is exactly what Gilmartin needs to jump start him. You can always stretch him back out next year.

Dear Frank Wren,
Do not trade away young talented pitching for guys that would barely be better than what is already here. Especially if he won't be here long.

Regards,
Adam Wainwright, Jeff Locke, Nefti Feliz, and Matt Harrison

The Braves aren't always good?

I find it strange that you would throw out the Ankiel trade as an example of a bad Braves deal.

why?

ankiel was beyond horrible before he was picked up and was just as bad as a brave. yeah, i remember the one single hit he got in the months he was here that was worthwhile, but that still doesn't mean he wasn't horrible. Tell me the Braves couldn't use Gregor Blanco now (which would mean available money for McCann) and Tim Collins.

Josh Johnson has pitched his last game before the deadline. Jays now have the dilema of moving him for very little now or later. The qualifying offer has disappeared in fear he would accept.

Question: Do you think he has anything left. Would there be interest as insurance that Beachy isnt ready or Wood has to go back to the pen if Wren is unable to get the LH RP.

Lightening in a bottle like Sheets last year a possibility?

We had minimal depth. That is an obvious fact.

So you wanted Teheran to start the season in AAA?

Yes. Or the bullpen. Now we are looking at one of our best pitchers approaching more innings than they have ever pitched professionally. Would be nice to have Teheran only two or three starts deep right now. Could have May/June Teheran in September/October.

Our top 5 heading into the year was Huddy, Minor, Maholm, Meds, Julio with Beachy, Wood, Gilmartin as depth.

Where does Lohse fit in for?

We could skip Julio a couple starts when we have an off-day.

And who was going to replace him in the rotation?

Also I don't think the innings is a big of an issue as this board makes it out to be.

Yep, the Cards face this same exact issue with Shelby Miller.

We used 10 starting pitchers last year (the league average). We haven't used less than 8 since Maddux pitched for us. And no one mentioned Wood as a possibility (and he hasn't been great) in spring training.
