Braves trade LaStella

Management already said Peraza will be given a shot to win the job in ST

I know that and of course they will say that, all teams do but that doesn't stop them from making other moves to keep a top prospect down. We see it every year with top prospects having good springs but not making teams because they want to wait where their clock starts later giving the team an extra year of control.

PS: They are also talking like Gattis is in their plans but I don't buy that either as much as I like him personally. I am not ruling out him staying here till next year's trade deadline however like some are. I am just saying it is more talking Gattis up for a trade IMO.

I never said it was. I like this move a lot, actually.

I figured as much, I don't hate this move either as it could work out fine depending on the health of Viz, how the funds are used and what we get in other trades (I am thinking bullpen here and namely Walden and/or Carpenter). Plus I do think it fits with punting this season whether or not you find it a good trade or not.

This trade obviously paves the way for at least one of Walden or Carpenter to be moved soon.

I don't think so. This move is clearly about restocking our system (through the international market) and getting a pretty good arm on top of that. I'm a little indifferent on La Stella, and honestly think that we can easily get someone to match the production he would have given us at 2nd. When you add that Peraza might be ready next year, this move makes a lot if sense.

I am not disagreeing that this was also in mind, my latter point was simply that this move doesn't go against punting in 2015 either. So unless you are expecting no rebuild towards more 2017 I don't think we really disagree. I am expecting this year to be more of a rebuild year, though possibly half and half too depending on what we acquire in trades (which by the way is what Hart has basically said in recent interviews such as the one with MLB Network recently). Then in 2016 I see us going a bit harder before gearing up the most in 2017.

Teams always deny trading their main players when they are rumored... I agree with that. But I don't agree that they always say their top prospects will be given a shot. There's absolutely nothing to gain by saying that if you're planning blatantly on something else in this case. There was no point in them saying it unless they mean he will actually be given a shot.

Good move and I'd prefer punting 2015 and actually getting the organization in better long term shape. Imo, trying to tinker with this current configuration is just going to leave us in the same boat we've been in for several years now. Punt 2015. Replace Fredi and be more competitive for 2016. And actually look forward to 2017.

They will say one way or another that they're giving them a shot when invited to spring training. But that doesn't rule out other qualifications, which have been reported concerning Peraza too. In fact, Peraza has been talked about more concerning 2016 while not ruling out sometime next year. Hart even said in one interview recently about how they didn't want to rush him (qualifications such as this one are often telling IMO).

Since it has been decided that Fredi is staying for 2015 I must admit that makes more sense. But I still am very disappointed with the idea of trading Heyward rather than signing him long term, among other likely moves to come. However, I also hate the idea of losing Justin Upton and Heyward to free agency with only a draft pick to show for it.

PS: I was excited looking towards having all three of Heyward, Simmons and Peraza on the same team together. But now it seems Peraza will be here about the time Heyward is either already gone or on the way out. I do believe Peraza and Simmons will make a great DP combo and that Peraza could win a number of gold gloves playing second here.

^^^ This. With a depleted farm system it makes losing them that way all the more short-sighted.

If we're resigned to trading Heyward, I would still try awfully hard to sign him back if he is set on testing free agency. This organization is really dropping the ball not having a talented, young player like him heading into the new park in a couple years.

Local guy too...

I agree. Ship him off, and prepare to pull out the stops when he hits FA. Send him somwhere terrible!

Anyone who trades for Heyward likely will have the money to sign him. Maybe if we trade him to like the Pirates or As but I don't think that's likely.

Yea it is more likely the team trading Heyward are a team prepared to offer him the long term deal we are not willing to offer.

I've got my doubts that we could sign Heyward long term even if we wanted to and have the payroll flexibility needed to make this a better team and organization.

Heyward could be worked into the budget if valued as important enough to do so. But I don't think we could afford to sign both he and Justin Upton long term. At least not without making other trades to free up more funds to do so.

Not a given . Also, his agent seems very intent on hitting FA. More like we aren't cozy going 200 million for the on field product yet. That could change given a big season.
