Braves trade Mallex and Simmons to M's for Gohara and Burrows

The crux of Cameron's take on this trade hinges on Mallex being a 4th OFer. I think he is easily a 2-3 WAR starting caliber CFer, not a 0-1 WAR bench player.

I'm not as high on Mallex as many here. I think he could be that 2-3 WAR CFer, but I think the most likely role is as a 4th OF on the heavy side of a platoon. Still, I'm nervous about Gohara. Maybe I'll feel better about this as I learn more about him, but he looks like a very risky asset.

LHP that can hit 100 and could still potentially start don't grow on trees. I like this deal for the same reason I liked the Alex Jackson deal, and that's because the upside is immense. It's risky, but we've built a level of depth that allows us to take on those risks.

true. just sometimes wonder what else could be had if you package Smith with other prospects. Could our return been better?

Surely Coppy knew he could get Smyly in a simple package around Smith. All I can think is that the report of Coppy almost making a deal for Archer was true and centered around Smith and others. Tampa countered and said they'd give Smyly and Coppy said no but the Mariners still really wanted him and figured out how.

That's a likely scenario.

It's funny because I suggested a trade with the Rays for Smyly centered around Smith long before the Braves went on their binge of acquiring starters with 1 year of control.

Smyly projects at 2.5 WAR next year, which is better than every single pitcher on the Braves roster not named Julio Teheran. Actually, according to FG projections, Smyly would be the best pitcher on the Braves staff, even better than Julio. Unbelievably bad series of moves for the Braves.

Why would the Rays want Smith so badly? They have Kiermaier.

It wasn't simply flipping Mallex for Smyly. The Vargas kid is a big international signing SS from 2015 who has huge tools. This would be like us trading Mallex and Pache/Cruz for Smyly. Considering Smyly is almost eligible for free agency, don't think he makes much sense for us.

I don't love the trade, but Gohara seems interesting enough. If he has a big year this year then we have a top 100 prospect in lieu of a solid 4th OF. I get the logic.

2017 projected WAR for a few pitchers of interest:

Teheran - 2.4
Garcia - 2.3
Colon - 2.2
Dickey - 1.8
Folty - 1.8

Smyly - 2.5

Seems Coppy done ****ed up in building his rotation for 2017.

He's negligibly better than the rest of those guys and they didn't cost an asset to acquire. Smyly has two years of control left where, unless he makes a jump, isn't going to provide that much (!!!!)surplus value(!!!!).

If you're upset, be upset with the trade we did make as opposed to the one we didn't make (and shouldn't have made)

I don't suppose I need to point out that those are projections and they typically have to play the games before reaching conclusions. One could easily make the argument that Teheran is way low and Smyly too high.

Nevertheless, if somebody was going to flip Mallex Smith for Drew Smyly, I wish it had been us.

Smyly has 2 years before FA I believe. Still of the options Gohora is a better long term fit if you are moving Mallex. While Smyly does project to be better than Colon, Dickey, and Garcia the difference is negligible. They are essentially interchangeable and gone after a year or two anyways.

The extension increased his trade value since he signed at under market value.

If there was any indication that they'd pull a stunt like that with the intention of trading him, just because of message board sentiment, it sure hasn't been shown publicly.
