DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Funny thing is, if Mac leaves I think I'll miss him more for his gamecalling/pitch framing than his actual bat. He was only a slightly above average hitter last year, but it was noticeable how much better some of our pitchers got when they threw to him.

Everyone seems to say he belongs in the AL, but I think if an AL team wants him and moves him to part time catcher only, the best part of his game is going to be mostly wasted, IMO.

Mac declines the QO.

As well as many others did today, nothing ground-breaking.

Hopefully the pick is in the 20-25 range.

We pick 29th in the 1st round. However, that pick will move up as the 13 free agents who were made qualifying offers sign with new teams, except for Kendrys Morales as the Mariners would only give up a 2nd rounder if he signs elsewhere since their 6th pick is protected. Also if any of those re-sign with the same club, like many think Robinson Cano will with the Yankees, that would not change the order. If the Red Sox or Cardinals sign one of them, since they pick after us, it would only affect our sandwich pick. My guess is our 29th pick will end up somewhere around #20, and our sandwich pick would then probably slot somewhere in the 25-28 range. We should be able to draft two pretty darn good, high ceiling guys with those first two picks if we don't go the safe route, which I really hope we don't.

Why would the Mariners give up a pick when Morales signs elsewhere?

The Braves pick will likely end up in the 20-22 range as you said though.

I guess I wasn't very clear. If they sign one of the QO free agents, they wouldn't lose their first round pick but rather their 2nd rounder. And if Morales signs elsewhere, they will gain a sandwich pick just like we will when Brian signs elsewhere.

No, we don't.

Boston didnt have a ton of stars and just won the WS so very dumb logic.

Disagree.

It's not about stars. It's about not having enough quality hitters. I think Losing Mac is as step down. We were terrible at 2B and CF. I don't believe in CJ. We'll need Simmons to step up and at least get above avg production from CF or 2B.

A lot of talk about an ACE. I dont' think we enough hitting when facing quality starters.

Pitching was the problems in the playoffs, not hitting though we didnt hit well really.

Mac was atrocious vs LA, 0-11 i believe, SSS i know but still.

Regards to hitters, you just hope a couple can get hot in the playoffs, then see what happens.

The hitting was poor throughout the playoffs with all teams. The two WS teams hit a combined .221 in the playoffs. We hit .214. Our problem was pitching which was awful. Our team ERA in the playoffs was a putrid 5.82 which sucked seeing how we had the best pitching in baseball during the regular season.

I tend to agree about the hitting concerns. Hard to know and McCann is probably in decline mode (especially if he catches 135 games), but Chris Johnson has to maintain his performance, Heyward has to stay healthy, Upton has to rebound, Simmons has to improve (with the bat), and whoever takes over for Uggla will have to step up (which is really only a baby step). Lots of question marks.

Prime, he gets worse every year....time for him to leave...fantastic hitter???? not for a while now..

You clearly didn't watch him play or bother to look at his stats this yr.

That, or you only judge a player on batting average.

I would love to see the argument for how he gets worse every yr.

The fact is in a play-off series usually some team has a player who they can't get out. For us we had no one while the Dodgers had Hanley Ramirez on a tear and the BoSox had Ortiz who no one could get out. It's usually a star but sometimes it's a lesser player who is the star in those play-off series like (IIRC) Eddie Perez in the '99 series against Houston.

By declining the QO, can McCann still negotiate a multi-year deal with the Braves IF Atlanta made additional offers?

I ask this for 2 reasons: 1. to know the legality of the baseball rules. And 2. to make sure that when he signs elsewhere, he HAD the chance to return to the Braves and work out a subsequent deal if the Braves offered. I don't want to hear crap about he wasn't asked back. Maybe not on the terms HE wanted, but he was asked back and HE declined, right??

If he signs for a big money, long term contract else where, great for him. I just hate the whining and crying from fans and players whenever its brought up that he wasn't able to be a lifetime Brave. He could have chose to stay with the Braves but made a decision to seek more $$$ somewhere else.

All declining the QO means if Mac signs elsewhere unless their pick is protected they lose their first round pick, regardless we get a sandwich pick.

McCann and the Braves are still free to negotiate any deal they want to. I think both are circling each other at the moment. It is a little known fact about negotiations that there is usually a disadvantage to making the first move. You want the other guy to tip his hand.

Troof

his wRC+ by season for the last 5

2009 - 119
2010 - 123
2011 - 122
2012 - 87
2013 - 122

Basically aside from his blip season he's been equal pretty muc every year.

Well his OPS and batting average have dropped every single year, there is no discounting that. His slugging has remained the same, but his OBP has dropped every year.
