DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Byrd is a good signing for them.

Good in the sense that he addresses their need for a right handed hitting OF.

2/$16 million will quite likely turn out to be an overpay and certainly does nothing to address the Phillies' consistently aging roster, but it certainly isn't the type of deal that will kill anyone considering they no longer have Halladay's salary on their books. Considering that other likely targets - Beltran and Cruz specifically - would've cost them more in both years and $$$, it's definitely a much smaller mistake than they could've made.

Mainly that, yes, but they have a protected pick so they wont lose its first rounder.

They have a lot of lefties in their main lineup: Brown, Utley, Asche, Howard, Revere.

So a righty was needed.

Cruz would of been a good signing depending on the cost.

won't be an overpay if Byrd can manage 1.5 WAR/year over the next two years.

Byrd could easily just go back to being a complete bum.
I doubt he comes anywhere close to last year's numbers.
Phils fans are not happy.

... (more Wren) ... "we could have five homegrown guys in our rotation that we like. A couple of them took big steps forward this year."

Wait?

You think Byrd is better than Cruz?

I don't think it's that crazy. Cruz benefits a lot from playing in Texas. His career splits are mountains apart. Byrd won't repeat last season, but I think he'll probably end up in the mid .750 -.800 range with 15-20 homers and good defense in LF.

Relax.

First, you guys need to stop placing so much importance in Twitter. Second, if you read the statement carefully, it's self-evident. A rotation is no longer "set" with just 5 guys. All that's implied is that they're hoping that Beachy returns, and that Wood will make at least some starts. It's nothing that we all don't already know, and does not preclude the possibility of other moves to improve the starting pitching.

Depending on what happens with a guy like Tim Hudson and other things that we’re talking about we could have five homegrown guys in our rotation that we like. A couple of them took big steps forward this year.

That's the full quote.

To me the interesting part is "other things that we're talking about." Note things plural. Note it is said in the context of discussing the starting rotation.

Fredi openly admitted to Todd Hollandsworth that one of those "things" is acquiring an "Ace" during his interview on XM yesterday morning.

Wainright was "homegrown"...maybe it's him...LOL.
