DOB: Braves offseason about to get a lot busier. - Gamel released.

Time for Wren to get creative:

Bethancourt, Hale, Shae Simmons and Uggla for Samardzija

how about Uggla, Beth and one of our young pitchers rather than two? Since the Cubs have Darwin Barney at 2b they may actually be one of the few teams for which Uggla is an upgrade.

We'd have to pay most of Uggla salary, but that's a forgone conclusion at this point. After all, we're the idiots who gave it to him.

In effect, we are compensating the Cubs for two things in this kind of deal. One is Samardzija. The other is taking on Uggla's contract. There has to be a calibration of the quality of prospects being sent with how much of the contract they take on.

No to Samardizja, he's good but blows up at times.

Maybe he puts up a Scherzer season at some point but not worth it.

Not even sure what Wren should do

If we could get Samardjiza for that package, we'd be an awfully stupid franchise to not take it.

Samardjiza as our 3rd or 4th starter would be incredible.
Minor
Medlen
Teheran
Samardjiza

is a really young and good rotation.

I think people are underestimating the progression Teheran could see this season, and the potential he has. His season as a 22-year old was awesome. He pitched 185.2 last year. Barring injury, he could touch 210-215.

No, you don't.

Samardizja isnt much of an upgrade over Wood/Beachy, so no.

huh?
you're not giving up anything big at all. bethancourt will be lucky to be an average catcher, hale is a #5 guy. and you dump uggla?
that's a no brainer. some of you guys are way too attached to our prospects.

More like im not a big fan of Samardizja.

But dumping Uggla would be good though.

Splitting hairs, but he won't ever be an average catcher unless his arm falls off. The bat is a different story. And that is still too much to give up for JS. However, adding Uggla does make me like the deal.

Simmons is the spect in that equation I get uneasy about dealing. Gonna need someone for CKs closer role...

We have some other interesting pitching prospects. I would prefer to hold on to Parsons rather than Simmons, but if the Cubs preferred Parsons or someone else (Martin, Schlosser, etc), I'd do it. I would try to hold on to Simms, Cabrera and Graham.

I mean all-around average. He could provide absolutely nothing offensively, which would make him useless as a starter.

I wonder if Jason Heyward really wants to play for the Yanks. If he is dead set on becoming a free agent in order to play for the Yankees, maybe the Braves could package him with Uggla. I would hate not having Heyward on the Braves.

We are handcuffed for the next several years by BJ's contract. Unless he has a miracle resurgence we're screwed.

I don't know what it is about free agents and FW but he has terrible luck.
