DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

Beating a dead horse I know but the Baseball America #12 prospect taken at #17 while we took the BA #13 prospect at #3. Obviously, somebody has this all wrong and I'm just praying it's not us.

They handed out huge bonuses before the slot system was introduced. Once again...

Pretty sure they went over with Giolito and paid penalty. Point is Braves were not going to get him. Padres didn't get him either so bonus pool did not matter. A good team drafted him and will pay him based on talent.

The ones he's giving the Braves who apparently are going by it as gospel. Just because someone is a writer doesn't mean their rankings should be dismissed in favor of a particular FO.

Who said the Braves are only listening to Kiley McDaniel?

If its a **** draft we wont know that for years.

I mean more about trying to play the slot system with the picks, and then not getting the picks you were hoping would slide to 40/44. I don't believe for a second that they took BPA like Coppy had been saying they would.

Anyone who does it has a track record. McDaniel's is outstanding. That's why the Braves hired him. He was a writer too, obviously.

Every team can go 5% over their cap. A lot of players get over slot deals, that just means they give lower slot deals to other picks to pay for it. At no point is any team giving up next year first round pick to sign Groome this year. If I was them I honestly would consider just taking a comp pick next year in what I think will be a better draft.

...and won't be able to get any other talent this year and perhaps no top talent next year, either. It may end up worth the gamble, but it's absolutely a gamble.

And the Nats exceeded their pool by $100,000 that year, just had to pay the monetary penalty. They would have to exceed it by enough to lose their 1st round pick next year if they wanted to sign Groome.

Evidently, someone in the F.O. told Gammons that weeks ago.

Someone made a comment about it earlier. Again. FO make stupid mistakes all the time including this one. This could be one of them. If Anderson was truly their top rated pitcher they wouldn't be paying him way under slot. And I think that's a stupid game to play. Get BPA.

Changing the system to one particular dollar amount and nothing different would probably be best. That way Coppy and Co can never be tempted to do this again.

I like McDaniel a lot. But dismissing certain writers because they don't align with our FO is stupid imo.

And Anderson could be the best player from this draft 5 years from now. There are a lot of possibilities. It's why it's dumb to fly off the handle about how stupid we are right now.

I guarantee you the draft strategy is not dependent on any 1 or two players falling. I'm sure they have an ideal scenario but if our ideal scenario doesnt happen they have other options. What teams do is draft players who signability issues after round 10 and then they see if they can buy them out of college.
