DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

Have a top 3 pick, don't draft a top 3 player. Braves thought they could outsmart everyone and failed.

Wasn't Benson one of the guys that was supposed to drop to 40, and is why the Braves drafted Anderson as an under slot guy?

Prepare to be very underwhelmed with this draft.

Your prior responses suggest otherwise.

No it didn't fuk-tard. All I said was he wouldn't fall to us and watch Washington take him. They have handed out huge bonuses in the past and it would be our luck to have them take him and pay over slot. They have 7+ million to spend. Would he sign for 4? He wasn't falling to 40. We missed on 2 best players in draft. Hell probably 10 beat. Eat a dik

They handed out huge bonuses before the slot system was introduced. Once again...

Crud, I was way too optimistic I guess. I was thinking Rookie ball this year once he signs. Then Low-A in 2017. High-A in 2018. AA / AAA with a probable call-up in late 2019 for the play-offs. Haha. Oh well.

I think he might be in Rome next year but that's no sure thing. If he does Rome next year and high A in 2018, then I see him spending a full year in AA in 2019. Mid-season 2020 would be when we'd see him if things go really well.

If he struggles to develop (and I think that's likely whenever you draft a high schooler) then 2021 or 2022 even would be when we'd see him.

There's also a very, very strong chance he never throws the first pitch in the majors. Such is the risk with high school pitchers like him.

Boston probably more than willing to sacrifice their 20-something 1st round pick next year to draft what many considered by far the best player in this draft only just recently. Maybe they were already anticipating losing next year's pick with free agent pick-ups this upcoming off-season. Or gaining a pick or two from other teams picking up one of the Sox's free agents.

One possibility, too, if we're still well under slot after 44, is to throw some serious money in later rounds at guys who were thought to be going to college regardless and see what happens.

I'm not saying this to run Anderson down, but criminy, every pitcher selected tonight is going to be compared to a HoF, an All-Star, or to an elite contemporary talent.

Well if Ian Anderson has the same career as Mike Mussina, then I think it's fair to compare the two.

Such is the nature of draft analysts.

I've read other sources saying Anderson has a middle of the rotation starter ceiling. Yippee!

There are still some pretty intriguing names on the board: Forrest Whitley, Blake Rutherford, Drew Mendoza, Delvin Perez...
