DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

And we could be! Disappointment aside, what I like about Anderson is that he hasn't thrown a million innings growing up and is someone wo is throwing his best right now. And I get the saving $3 million for later picks.

Hope you're right.

I know these sites don't know everything, but the Braves are the only team that has drafted a player ranked outside the top 10....at #3. And it was yet another pitcher.

I am very concerned.

Unless the Braves know something we don't and a premium player falls to 40, this is insanely stupid. Going overslot to get another mid to late first round talent at 40 is the equivalent of deciding you'd rather have two ten dollar bills than one twenty and one five.

Dude, chill. It's a legitimate opinion. Every bit as legitimate as being perfectly satisfied with the chance of maybe being pretty good in five years. But hey, if these guys don't pan out, the good news is that we'll suck and have MOAR draft picks! Shades of Shanks, when every pick was good and every Braves farmhand was a stud. . .

I have no issue with differing opinions. I do take issue with people who seem to be miserable at everything all the time and view everything through the most pessimistic lens possible. My point stands - if someone hates so much about the way the Braves do things, then find another team to root for. It seems like that would be best for everyone.

Corey Ray says he models his game after Jacoby Ellsbury.

Glad Atlanta didn't take him then. Ellsbury might be the 2nd most overrated player I've ever seen.

Braves selected high school RHP Ian Anderson with the third pick in the 2016 draft.
The Braves had some big-time prospects from Georgia to pick from, most notably outfielder Kyle Lewis, but they fell in love with Anderson, who was rated as the draft's No. 12 prospect by Baseball America. A 6-foot-3 righty from New York, Anderson reaches the mid-90s with his fastball and should feature a plus curve in time. Yahoo's Jeff Passan reports that Anderson will sign a deal well under slot, giving the Braves more room to maneuver later

Well you know, since Billy Beane isn't making the decision, it's the wrong decision. The Paul Snyder philosophy is apparently antiquated.

Considering we dont have any OF bats worth a damn, and Ray/Lewis were there for the taking, i can get people being mad about this.

Hoping a guy like Groome falls is a bad draft strategy.

When you're picking top 3, you want a blue chip kinda guy.

Not sure Anderson is.

Whats your definition of blue chip? If Anderson isnt it then there might not be any in this draft. Heres an excerpt from his BA scouting report....

"Anderson added a little bit of weight to his 6-foot-4, 180-pound frame over the winter, but scouts are dreaming on him continuing to get stronger, wondering just how high his ceiling could be if he can add more strength. "

He isnt a low ceiling prospect.

I will take a consensus top 3 prospect and the 40th best prospect over two top 20-25 prospects. So what happens when Groome doesn't fall to 40? We could still take a Benson at 40 if we drafted a Groome.

It's not always just a hope. I understand people's frustration and disappointment, I do. I've said in the past I didn't want us to get 2 prospects in the 15 or so range instead of 1 at the top, and I've been a victim of having tunnel vision on 1 or 2 guys as well. I've been as high on Lewis as anybody.

But you have to take a step back and realize that in the MLB draft, nothing is certain. Nothing. If the Braves had Anderson as the top pitcher in the draft and they could get him well under slot, why not do it? And regarding just the 'hope' someone like Groome falls, it may be far more concrete than you think.
