DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

We will trade Julio for offense soon enough. Get as much talent as you can in the draft, 3 top 25 players is huge. We are playing to the drafts strength, which is the top 25ish players. It's a middle heavy draft, not too heavy. We didn't pass on Bregman or Swanson. Smart move.

Didn't like the strategy, but looks like got 3 good arms. Would much rather have had Lewis at 3. They were probably hoping a good bat fell to 40, and it didn't work the way they wanted. We will never hear that though. Either way, 3 good arms to help through shutouts.

He dropped to #12. I used the Michael Tucker comp earlier today as a smaller-college hitter who never truly developed as a major leaguer. You think these scouts don't know what they are doing. And it's not just us. The 11 other teams before Seattle didn't think he was their guy either.

True, which makes it even more important to target the elite ceiling guys when you draft third and not settle for a couple guys who are much longer shots to be aces.

I like Anderson. If we picked 12th I'd have been happy. I'm not happy with him at 3 even if it gets us Wentz.

With our system the way it is, I'd have taken the risk on Pint or Groome's ceilings. Even Puk.

I think you're selling Anderson a bit short. There's a strong argument he's at worst a top ten pick.

I don't hate the way this has gone, but acting like the international draft will cure our offensive woes is a little crazy to me. We're talking about 18-year-old HS arms being far away. If that's true, then why are we expecting 16-year-old international signings to fix anything in the next few years?

No HS pitcher taken in the top 15 or so has a ceiling of a mid-rotation starter.

Not saying that's Anderson's ceiling. I'm saying Pint has a higher ceiling and is more likely to be an ace than. Anderson could surprise me and be an ace. However, I think it's more likely he's a Matt Wisler type middle of the rotation starter.

We probably couldnt get Muller and Wentz if we took Pint, Groome or Ray/Lewis.

That would eat up most of our draft pool.

I like Pint's ceiling better than Anderson's. Anderson screams solid, middle rotation to me.

Anderson is a fine pitcher but I don't see him as a top 10 talent. Without draft slotting I don't see him sniffing the top 10.

I haven't read a single recent scouting report suggesting him or Wentz just have the ceiling of a middle rotation guy. If Anderson has the ceiling of Mussina or deGromm he most certainly has an ace ceiling. Have you even read the scouting reports? I don't think you're giving either near enough credit.

Not when you consider the actuarial outcomes for HS pitchers drafted in various portions of the draft.

I get the point you're trying to make. But you sound like a crazy person when you keep insinuating the Braves don't have enough pitching. They'll have to keep adding pitching as time goes on, but it's pretty impossible for the Braves to have more pitching than they currently do.

And we probably have more legit pitching prospects in our system right now than any in the history of baseball.

Well considering he already pitches much harder than Wisler and has multiple plus pitches as a high schooler with a projectable frame not so sure that's a great comp

I haven't looked at the numbers but strongly suspect that if you look at the proportion of position players in the major leagues that are non-American that it is significantly higher than the proportion of pitchers who are non-American. So going hitter in the international market and pitcher in the draft might simply reflect how the talent is distributed in the two feeder systems.

What specifically about Anderson makes you say that?

We've had by far the worst offense in baseball over the last three seasons. Apparently we're going to buy our way out of that on the international market. Sounds good. What's 3-4 more years? I think I'm going back on self imposed hiatus until the "long haul" gets here. At least we have the Olympics this summer. Rowing events in Rio's raw sewage Zika water should be interesting.

Someone please explain to me how a team that has the previous years #1 overall prospect in Swanson and is about to sign Maitan who would be the #1 pick in 2016 if he was eligible but we are somehow neglecting bats. When Maitan signs our top 3 prospects will be bats and we are a system loaded with pitching.

I might be. I just don't see Anderson as a top 10 talent. He's a prototypical middle of the first round pick. The fact that he has injury concerns and most of his hype is based off a strong finish you don't know if he'll keep up takes him out of the top 10 for me.
