DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

Anyone feel like we have Matt Millen as gm, but drafting pitchers instead of wr's?

It's just so bizarre.

We traded Heyward - a hitter - for pitching... OK

We traded Upton - a hitter - for pitching... OK

We traded Gattis - a hitter - for pitching... OK?

We traded Kimbrel for pitching... Sheesh!

We traded Wood, and a hitting prospect - for the league's worst player - a hitter - a swing and a miss

We traded simmons - a not-good hitter - for pitching... enough already!

We also used $10M in payroll to buy a pitching prospect

We traded Miller for hitting... good job there. No complaints here

We spent high draft picks in 2015 on all pitchers... with the one hitter we did draft was a converted pitcher

Then we spend nearly all of our drafting capital on pitching in 2016.

Meanwhile we have the league's worst offense and a farm system with no clear cut impact hitters.

I don't get the strategy. Seems like overkill.

We did trade for Olivera--a hitter.

Those yearning for a hitter need not despair. By hook or by crook we are going to acquire major league players to man catcher and third by the start of next season. At some point next season we'll also see Swanson and Albies take over at short and second. That's the short-term plan for the lineup.

Long-term, I think Acuna, Yepez, Isranel Wilson, Maitan and some of the other international signings from last year and this year will have a significant impact. We've made a heavy investment there . I'm looking forward to seeing Cruz and Pache in the GCL this year. Ventura will also be making his stateside debut. Yes, all of these guys are a long ways off. But it is unrealistic to target a particular year and say this is going to be our magical year. You build a solid farm system and use it to gradually add to the major league team and let the chips fall where they may.

Prado-type is to Prado as psoriasis is to AIDS.

We all worry that the comparison might give you cirrhosis.

Braves should have drafted Devin Smeltzer on the name alone.

PS--A few more college seniors in Round 5. I thought the Braves might go that direction to really lowball relatively early and get bigger savings than waiting until later today.

Undrafted out of high school, Walker slowly but steadily developed into a prospect over his three-year career at Gardner-Webb. He forced his way into the rotation by his sophomore year, and took off as a junior this season. Walker has the body type that scouts look for in a young pitcher, with a high waist and wide shoulders defining his lanky 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame. His delivery starts with a hand pump to his hips and an early hand break, then he wraps his arm behind his back slightly before firing through a slightly higher three-quarters arm slot. Walker shows present stuff, with his fastball sitting routinely at 89-93 and bumping 94 often, though scoutssaid they saw him reach as high as 96 mph late in his junior season. The righthander throws a sweeping, early-breaking slider in the low 80s, which he locates to either side of the plate, and a soft curveball in the mid-70s to keep hitters off-balance the second time through the order. Walker could add more velocity down the line, as there's room for him to improve his hip-shoulder separation and improve his timing to get the most out of his natural strength.
