After looking, the weird thing is, BA lists him as a prospect and put him at #16 in all of baseball on their mid season list.

But I just can't consider a 30-year-old a prospect, not the same kind as a 20- to 24-year-old. And with all his potential issues, it just makes no sense for us.
 
I don't know what you all are bitchin about. This deal is a slam dunk for us!

Wow WTF. I am going to try and stay optimistic here. Olivera could fill a very big need for us which is a RH hitter to hit behind Freeman and he can play 3B. The 3B market FA market is abysmal. Juan Uribe and Daniel Murphy are the best options. I like getting the #35 pick in next years draft, its supposed to be a great class and this pick could move into the 20's after free agency. Morse has been up and down the last few years but if we get him with LA paying his salary that could turn out well for us. To be honest I am/was a little worried about Wood's dropping FB velocity. He is barely over 89 this year. I dont think he can maintain his effectiveness if it drops much further. This trade would make a lot more sense to me if we go after a top tier starter in free agency.
 
I am trying to think of reasons we would make this trade. This are some possibilities I have come up with:

1) Dodgers GM has sex tape of Hart and using it to bribe him.
2) We have gotten rid of CJ to either the Marlins or Dodgers and no one has discovered it yet.
3) Dodgers have given us their 1st and 2nd round picks for the next 5-7 years.
4) Hart was on a meth bender.
5) Olivera is actually 16 years old and if you get him you get his two best friends (top 5 international prospects) who are coming into the league next year.
 
Here is what the guy at BA who also does the Braves write ups had to say about Bird coming into this season

Ben Badler: Pretty fascinating guy, because the pitcher scouts saw in August was a different guy than what he showed before that. Early in the year he was sitting in the low-90s and touched 94, but by the end of the season his velocity skyrocketed, he started sitting 93-96 mph and even cracked 99. Then he also started pitching exclusively from the stretch to simplify his mechanics, and you can see that, other than one rough start, he overmatched hitters in August. The secondary stuff needs work, and it’s still a debate whether he ends up a starter or ends up a reliever, but his stock is up and the arrows are pointing in the right direction.
 
I would not have done this deal, however I was a Braves fan yesterday, I am a fan today, and I will be one tomorrow. As we close in on the 25th anniversary of the Dale Murphy trade it is easy to forget baseball is, and always will be a business. And none of us have any control over what deals Hart or any other Braves GM to come might make.
 
I am confused by what I am seeing. How in the world is a 30YO player who has never seen a major league pitcher merit trading a guy that costs little Woods still under control for another year before arbitration, Avilan, Jim Johnson AND Peraza, oh yeah they throw in a minor league reliever and a A ball pitcher, "Bird likely won’t reach a ceiling higher than No. 3 starter".
and a friggin draft pick I care crap about.

As far as I can see Olivera is no power hitter for sure, he might be OK with average, but that remains to be seen as he has never faced a ML pitcher.

Someone needs to investigate the brave front office for whacky tobacky.
I am certainly disappointed in the transaction, all the while keeping a lousy Julio Teheran in the rotation. I guess we know why Folty was brought up as it looks as though he will remain in the rotation as Williams Perez takes Banuelos's spot.

How can you justify giving up a cheaper starter that has performed as well as Wood has and add all those other players for so little in return?

Sources: Atlanta may not be done after dealing Alex Wood. Braves have listened on Julio Teheran as well. SP market still awfully crowded.
 
I keep seeing people saying Olivera is a power hitter to hit behind Freeman, it what universe is a guy that hits one homer every 30 AB a power hitter?

Albert Pujols is a power hitter, 1 homer for each 15 AB, Mike Trout is a power hitter at 1 homer each 17 AB. A 30 YO hitting one every 30 AB is no power hitter, oh and NOT against ML pitchers like the 2 mentioned.

I mean with this potential Teheran trade and the Wood+Pereza trade... all I can think is that I get it, you are in rebuild mode - get ready for 2017 and all that.

At what point do you stop yourself and go, we aren't going to get better than what we have now with regards to some players. Wood, Pereza, potentially Teheran now? These are young and cheap, quality or better guys who are controllable long term; exactly what you want in a rebuild... and you're getting rid of them? It makes little sense.

If we think we just got the Dodgers to overpay for SP, then I don't want to see what we would take for Teheran.

It makes no sense to trade him right now. But this deal also makes no sense, so whatever.
 
The MLBTR update on the deal, time coded at 12:46 Eastern, did NOT mention Peraza in the deal at first. I have pasted the relevant graf below. I

The “basic” structure of the deal (though there’s nothing basic about this move) is as follows: the Dodgers will receive right-hander Mat Latos and first baseman Michael Morse from the Marlins and pitchers Alex Wood, Jim Johnson and Luis Avilan from the Braves. Atlanta, in turn, will receive Cuban infielder Hector Olivera, lefty Paco Rodriguez and minor leaguer Zachary Bird from the Dodgers. The Braves are also picking up Miami’s Competitive Balance Round A pick in next year’s draft (No. 34 overall). The Marlins will come out of this deal with three minor league pitchers — Kevin Guzman, Jeff Brigham and Victor Araujo plus the financial relief of shedding the remaining $14.3MM that is owed to Latos and Morse.

HANG ON...Farther down in the story, it talks about about parting way with Peraza, so I'm guessing this was just a careless mistake.
