GDT: 5/04 - Braves @ MarLOLins

I still find it interesting that the Braves took Soroka 14 picks after selecting Kolby Allard in the first round of the 2015 draft. Who'd have guessed there'd be such a huge difference in their trajectories just four years later.

I was a little worried when they selected Allard as high as they did given his back issues as a high school senior. The scouting staff was of the impression that he would both heal and develop physically. Maybe either or both haven't happened. I remember the board when they took Soroka at #28. A lot of unpaid volunteer scouts were very uncomplimentary towards the Braves' people who scout for a living.

Nats just took a two run lead on the Phillies in the top of the seventh. Be nice to pick up a game on Philly tonight.

IIRC the "pundits" that year had Soroka barely in the top 100 prospects if at all. Most thought the Braves could've gotten a considerably higher rated prospect at #28 than Soroka. Just goes to show that conventional wisdom sometimes isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

It was even worse when riley was taken.

I wasn't on the board back then, but I remember being a little iffy on the pick as well. Not because I didn't like Soroka, but because I thought he could have been had later on in the draft. I remember wanting us to take either Ke'bryan Hayes (Because I know his dad, Charlie. Same high school) or Daz Cameron with that pick. I'm glad they took Soroka/Riley with those sandwich picks, though. It would be nice to have Hayes instead of Allard, though.

Only saw late pieces and parts. Soroka only at 92 but our only pitcher who seems to have any movement on his fastball. Still controls it with movement.

Hope acuna is ok. I’d sit him tomorrow if it’s anyth mire than a cramp.

Its definitely hard to argue with the results from that draft. I do think that there is a question about how the Braves handled that draft from a game theory perspective. Lets say the Braves take someone like Tristan Mckenzie with that pick. Could we have gotten Riley and Soroka with the 41st and 75th picks in that draft? I think its possible and that would have been a really good result. But I'm glad that we have Soroka and Riley now, in hindsight.

Name-dropper. Just lost every bit of credibility you ever had.

How's your best friend Charlie doing these days???

Yeah, that was pretty much the feeling of many of the people who were complaining on the board at the time as well. I was really wanting us to pick Hayes at the Soroka pick at the time too, and felt we could get Soroka at 41 and Riley at 75. Obviously with the way Soroka and Riley have developed it's not something that would have been worth the risk.

Definitely possible to get too cute with drafting scenarios. I’m glad the Braves didn’t fall into that trap.

You think this might be lame.

Nats pen is even worse than ours. Man they are bad.

Yeah, as bad as our pen is (and it's really bad), as of a few days ago we actually had the 2nd best pen in the NL East. There are a lot of really, really bad bullpens across baseball.
