GDT 6/10/19: Running it back vs the Pirates

Let's get back on topic. Man, how about that game last night, right? The Braves sure did beat those Pirates on 6/10. That Markakis came up big.

Or Machado and his .730 OPS at 10/300

For that comp, I’d bring up Donaldson at 1/$23 (.775 OPS, 108 wRC+, 0.8 fwar, 1.5 bwar) against Machado’s 10/$300 (.730 OPS, 96 wRC+, 1.0 fwar, 0.8 bwar).

Looks like being value junkies isn’t all that terrible.

Another way to slice it: Harper and Machado have been paid around $20-million so far this year to cumulatively produce 2.5 fwar / 1.6 bwar, while Markakis and Donaldson have been paid around $9.5-million to cumulatively produce 1.6 fwar / 2.6 bwar.

If you go with fwar, both duos have been just a bit more valuable than the going rate; if you opt for bwar, the former duo has been overpaid and the latter substantially underpaid.

The non Mukaki and non Perfect Boob touching portions of this thread have been excellent. Way to go team.

the question I kept asking this off-season is whether there was a more cost-effective way to spend 29M than to bring in Donaldson, Markakis and McCann on one year deals (one year plus option in the case of Markakis)...still waiting for an answer

At the very least, spending big on the relief market—regardless of the team’s 2019 relief performance—was demonstrably not a better flex.

Part of the thinking also has to be that it is easier to pick up a couple relievers mid-season than to get a quality starter or position player. It was fine to take a chance on the relievers we had in camp during spring training.
