GDT 6/13/19: Keep the steak alive

Dumb Padres base runners. As soon as they tagged up on Neck’s catch I was yelling IBB Margot at the tv! I was thinking surely Snit can’t even mess that situation up!

Good news is that Luke Ray won't be available tomorrow.

Bad news is that it'll likely be Minter in a save situation.

Unless Soroka goes CGSO

Hes no kirby Yates but Luke has the 17th best xwoba in baseball. Hes good.

I’ve never seen anyone with luck as bad as Luke’s this year. It’s unbelievable.

That said, he nearly gave up a walk off bomb to one of the worst hitters in baseball and nearly walked a relief pitcher with the bases loaded. This wasn’t one of his better performances.

Does Luke nibbling breaking balls into the dirt over and over when he's ahead in the count and then falls behind get considered into the formula to determine how unlucky he is?

I would love Jackson to be more aggressive. It is like he is afraid to throw his fastball. His fastball is good enough when coupled with his great slider. He just need to use it when ahead instead of trying to trick guys with the slider all the damn time.

Yeah it seems as soon as he gets ahead in count with 2 strikes he starts dumping breaking balls into the dirt.

I actually would like to see him throw that breaking ball early in the count over for strikes to establish it.

It is painful to watch but also magnified when things like Dansby rushing a throw with Kinsler running as if Kinsler were Tatís Jr. when Dansby had plenty of time still and would have gotten Kinsler by three or four steps if he had only taken his time and not thrown a lawn dart that not even Freddie could keep in front of him.

17th best?? For a #1 team and PS contender, that's not good enough IMO. Of all NL RP qualifiers(40 have at least 1 save) only Stammen has more blown saves, 7 to Jackson's 6, he's tied for 9th(Romo and Inglesias) for # of saves, has a WAR of .8 which is 10th highest, and only 10 have a higher WHIP than he does(44 H,18 BB in 46 IP).

If and when he falls out of love with his slider, then I would agree that he's good. However, I still wouldn't want him trying to close out games in the PS.

At least a Mejía homer only ties the game if Dansby doesn't trip over his dick and makes a routine throw (for him) to get Kinsler.

Of the current 10 teams in the playoffs Jackson would rank 6th in xWOBA among the closers. And that fluctuates daily on whether Phillies/Brewers are the final WC spot which. He's 1st or 2nd in the NL depending on that as well. Jackson has been very good this year.

And the reason he loves his slider is because it's really good. Second most vertical break of any slider in baseball this year. His high usage is the reason he's been as good as he's been. I hope he keeps throwing it a lot.

Pretty sure no one is suggesting he abandon his slider but throwing it 16 times out of 20 pitches after the Manny homer is a bit excessive. It was like manny scared him off his fastball. And 3 of those fastballs were to a relief pitcher after he went to a 3 ball count because of his slider. Even the best pitch can become less effective if that is all you throw. Unless you are some freak like Rivera.

Jackson is a good BP arm.

The Braves still need to add to the BP.

I hope they get the best BP arm available.

It would be great to add an arm with an elite track record.

All statements can be true at the same time.
