GDT 6/13/19: Keep the steak alive

Pretty sure no one is suggesting he abandon his slider but throwing it 16 times out of 20 pitches after the Manny homer is a bit excessive. It was like manny scared him off his fastball. And 3 of those fastballs were to a relief pitcher after he went to a 3 ball count because of his slider. Even the best pitch can become less effective if that is all you throw. Unless you are some freak like Rivera.

Because his fastball is not a good pitch. It gets hammered for a reason.

It's funny how badly that part of the rebuild has gone.

And at the same time, I feel like we have had an okay success rate with these pitchers. Folty, Newk, Soroka, Fried, and Touki have all done quite well. It just goes to show how much pitching depth is required to be competitive. The only true failed guys are Wisler, Blair, Sims, and likely Gohara.

Edit: You can also make a very sound case that our ability to replace any injury/underperformance with league average pitching has been one of the keys to this season. That is direct result of the rebuild strategy.

When you consider the acquisition cost of a guy like Webb, Jackson or Swarzak it becomes easy to question the kind of resources that were expended on Newk and some of high end pitching prospects who look like they are going to end up in the pen. Now if we were able to get another Soroka caliber starting pitcher from the bunch I would change my tune a bit.

Question away. The strategy was always curious. It’s easy to see how we would have been better off with targeting more position players.

But an understated advantage of drafting and acquiring pitchers is you have a much lower performance floor whereby you can extract value. Having the upper minors filled with capable starters and relievers is, IMO, a primary reason we are in first.

Of course, the #1 reason we are in first is our near perfect success rate with Ozzie/Dansby/Acuna/Riley.

Implicit in all the Braves Way and Gold Standard Franchise talk was the idea we were somehow better than other franchises at finding and developing pitchers. If that were true it would provide some logic for concentrating resources in the area where we had a comparative advantage. The only problem is that we seem to have a comparative advantage with position players.

It’s definitely a relief to see the elitism that emanated from the previous regime gone. Even when they were correct, it made it difficult to appreciate what they were doing.

I appreciate that they went all in on the rebuild and this current team benefitted a lot from decisions that they made (especially the decision to keep Freddie).

They tried to trade away Ozzie. Coppy was a clown and Hart a smug moron. Except for trades with Dave Stewart they did poorly.

When we win the World Series I hope we give Stewart a championship ring.

Who traded heyward for miller? That trade made the dback trade possible
