GDT 7/13/22: Braves vs Mets - Lefties and Defense

Yes, the Braves hit their 90th percentile outcome in the rotation for the first half of the season. Wright and Strider have been amazing and have filled the holes, while all of Fried, Morton and Anderson have pitched close to expectations.

I am confident some posters are physically unable to understand that planning for the 90th percentile outcome is not a sound strategy, and that limiting downside risk is critical for teams with legit WS aspirations. AA should have acquired another SP option 5 months ago.

Your issue is with AA, not "some posters" on CC

Looks like our great GM planned for the same.

AA is a great GM, but he is not beyond reproach.

The Will Smith contract was a mistake.

The Rosario contract was a mistake.

The Smyly, Hamels and Ozuna deals were suspect, but not necessarily bad.

Not adding SP depth was a mistake that hasn't bit him...yet.

So AA's worst mistakes aren't actually that bad, which is part of what makes him such a good GM. We can still point out the mistakes though, just like we point out the brilliant moves.

There was no mistake by passing on Grienke for that price tag. I don't' think anyone was against him using some funds on a flyer for <3M though.

Nice to see Nimmo not lead off the game with a 15 pitch at bat preceding him sprinting to first base after a walk.

AA did try to get Justin V this last off season... so it seems his approach was to get an impact starter on some sort of short contract... but wasn't going to grab some random 2 win pitcher.

You can argue the $13M per year on Smith could have been better distributed, but ultimately his stellar pitching last October helped us lock down close games and win a World Series, therefore accomplishing the ultimate goal. That was probably the peak for him and I would lean toward not bringing him back, but it’s a bit much to call his signing a “mistake.” Re-signing him to a multi-year deal would likely be a mistake.

Yeah - His performance in the playoffs made that contract worth it. Don't care what anyone says.
