GDT 7/13/22: Braves vs Mets - Lefties and Defense

Yeah - His performance in the playoffs made that contract worth it. Don't care what anyone says.

That's because you are incapable of separating results from process.

In your mind, if someone wagered $100 on a coin flip that would pay $150 for being correct and then won that $150...they made the right choice! Typical logical fallacy many people follow.

At a certain point results are the only thing that matters.

He had some 'tired arm' early in the year but his last 10 games he is over 94 with the last six games all having average over 94.

Problem is we've seen what happens to him when he's sitting at 93, he gets hammered. Supposing his more recent velocity is still his real velocity, how long does that last? He's got a very thin margin of error. Once his velocity starts to slide he'll get very bad very quick.

Agreed - Not trying to disagree iwth you in anyway. I'm down on Anderson now as well and no longer see him as a long term fixture.

Very impressive throw by Nido to cut down RAJ stealing. Thought Acuña had that easily.

It was going to take an absolutely perfect throw from the knees to get Acuna. That's exactly what Nido did. That's probably a successful steal even against the best catchers 90+% of the time.

As far as starting pitching goes, we were never going to spend the $40 million on Scherzer and we made the play at Verlander. If we had gotten a deal done with Freddie, we could have done the big damn trade to get a guy like Castillo one or both of the Oakland guys. We could have tried to pry Wainwright on the back end, but I think he was intent on finishing with the Cardinals. Greinke or Cueto wouldn’t have added much. Without adding Jansen, we’d be relying on an up and down Smith or reserving Minter instead of being able to use him (ideally) at different points along with Matzek.

Now, for this coming offseason, I do think adding another starter will be important. If the opportunity presents itself to add a controllable, closer to frontline starter at the deadline who would be an upgrade over Anderson, even if that involves trading Anderson, I’d like AA to do it.

Dansby stares at a damn ball in the zone for strike three and Matty swings at **** way up in the zone. Both 3-2. Just gotta be smarter than that.

Yeah - My tense was wrong in the sentence. I reserve the right to believe that we need an additional starter this offseason.

But we definitely didn't need one this past offseason.

Yes we did. NOBODY could see Wright or Strider performing like this. And if they didn’t well we’d be buried in 3rd place right now.

That's not true. Anyone who consistently predicts players will end up performing at their 90th percentile outcome would definitely see them performing like this. And that person would also plan around the improbable outcome, failing to protect against downside.

They'd be wrong most the time, just like they were wrong about Newk and his stretch of 5 win seasons, or Allard being a top of the line guy, or every other time they listed out every pitching prospect in the organization as if they were all going to contribute to an amazing staff. But the one time they just so happen to be right...they will blabber about it over and over and over.

And I can't blame them. If I was correct 1-2 times per decade I'd probably cheer those few times too.
