GDT 7/13/22: Braves vs Mets - Lefties and Defense

That's not true. Anyone who consistently predicts players will end up performing at their 90th percentile outcome would definitely see them performing like this. Abd that person would also plan around the improbable outcome.

They'd be wrong most the time, just like they were wrong about Newk and his stretch of 5 win seasons, or Allard being a top of the line guy, or every other time they listed out every pitching prospect in the organization as if they were all going to contribute to an amazing staff. But the one time they just so happen to be right...they will blabber about it over and over and over.

And I can't blame them. If I was correct 1-2 times per decade I'd probably cheer those few times too.

Fried/Riley/Wright

Thats more than 1-2 times in the past 5 years.

But that is you being wrong at least twice in the same time frame.

AA is a great GM, but he is not beyond reproach.

The Will Smith contract was a mistake.

The Rosario contract was a mistake.

The Smyly, Hamels and Ozuna deals were suspect, but not necessarily bad.

Not adding SP depth was a mistake that hasn't bit him...yet.

So AA's worst mistakes aren't actually that bad, which is part of what makes him such a good GM. We can still point out the mistakes though, just like we point out the brilliant moves.

I still say the SP thing was understandable. AA said they looked at it but didn't see a deal. So he pivoted and put more money in the pen. I think that was the right move, especially for a team looking to win in october. I would have hated paying for Grienke.

Now if he can add a solid innings eater at the deadline for nothing, that is great. Likely a guy that won't make the post season roster if healthy. But we have had a couple of years in a row where we've been piecing together starts in the playoffs after Max.

I just don't see who AA could have gotten in the offseason unless it was a trade. I don't see a guy who was traded where I think we should have beat the price.

Some things just have to wait until the deadline when the prices are super cheap.

Smith and Rosario contracts were WTF moments when they happened. WS was the draft pick, the dollars and the length of the deal combined. Rosario it was the second year.

I can't disagree with that. Pivoting from a SP to McHugh/Jansen was well done.

Maybe the length of the deal and dollars on Smith. But consider how much of a train wreck the pen was in 2019 before the deadline moves to get Melancon, Martin, and Greene. Relief pitching is volatile. Minter had not proven he could stick at the MLB level yet, Matzek didn’t really come on until 2020, Jackson was effective but still a little up and down. And Smith had success with the Giants. He took what looked on paper like a good pen and made it deeper, knowing the volatility. Same approach he took this past offseason.

Bassitt has looked bad today. Lots of hittable pitches. Even two of the outs that inning were hard hit just right at infielders.
