GDT 8/19 game 2 vs. Pirates (Harrangutang

Where's graffy? I need a stat showing our record with Heyward in the leadoff spot without Dan Uggla and with Dan Uggla in the lineup.

Also, if we keep up this winning pace (with Fredi at the helm it wouldn't surprise me if we did), we're going to be right at 102 wins.

Fredi finally moves Heyward back to the top and drops BJ, and we are on a winning streak and back in the playoff picture. But he doesn't deserve any blame for ****ing it up all these months. Nope. Just credit now for finally putting a decent lineup out there.

And he still has no clue how to use the second spot in the lineup. It is so bizarre. He makes his job a lot harder than it needs to be.

Didn't help that Freeman was hitting like garbage, and Gorn was hurt and was awful when he came back off the DL. Justin was really the only offense we had for a while, and TLS.

And it somehow cost Stella! his job. You know, the guy who has .340 .426 .472 .898 vs lefties. Who did he lose it to? Gosselin. You know, the guy who has .261 .261 .261 .522 vs lefties.

As a team vs LHP - .263 .336 .402 .738 (8th)

As a team vs RHP - .242 .303 .365 .669 (26th)

Looks like having a few lefties at the top would be a good thing.

I don't understand the reasoning to ever start Goss in front of TLS. It's almost like Fredi is desperately searching for a RHed batter to stick between Heyward and Freeman. He knows he can't put BJ or Simmons there, so he starts Goss over TLS so he can stick him in the 2 hole.

Problem is, if you are going to use a horrible RHed hitter to split up the 2 best LHed hitters, you may as well just go ahead and bat 3 LHed hitters in a row because the opposing manager is STILL going to use a single LOOGY to face both Heyward and Freeman. Stick someone like Justin or Gattis (or even CJ) between them and the opposing manager at least has to think about not letteing the LOOGY face the RHed hitter.

Stick 2 dangerous RHed hitters between Heyward and Freeman and you can guarantee the opposing manager will not leave the LOOGY in.

What are their career numbers vs. lefties in the minors? I have no clue, but I thought Goss hit lefties fairly well.

I know Goss is significantly better on defense, is a better base runner, and possibly has more power so if he really has performed well against lefties in the minors, I can at least see a case for Goss in the lineup vs. lefties, but I certainly would not bat him 2nd.

People seem to over rate TLS and underrate Gosselin on this board. I believe it was 50 poundhead that first brought this up.

Yes. The Gosselin/La Stella platoon has some pretty good justification if you consider their minor league splits, especially this year in AAA. Also Gosselin is the better defender.

I think with TLs everyone is impressed with his eye at the plate which only improves with more abs while Goss looks a bit like a hacker.

I think people underrate TLS's grit, maturity and leadership oh and clutchness he's shown in his time up.

You're right about Stella's grit maturity leadership and clutchness. But I think Gosselin has some of that as well.

It wasn't me, but I think the La Stella love does go a bit over the top here. He's a nice little player who fits the team's needs well, but at his peak he's probably a consistent .725 OPS guy who is an average defender. Gosselin is a utility guy who has had a year no one really expected. But he is a utility guy. Thought this article at Talking Chop kind of summed up the whole thing succinctly.

Yeah. Only issue I have is TLS defense is probably worse than the author lets on.

I really like Gosselin. Hope he stays on the team, even next year. I just like Stella! more.

That's a nice OPS for someone with no power. It means he is getting on base at a great rate.
