GDT 8/6/13: Braves (Teheran) @ Nationals (Gonzalez) 7:05 PM

Adam LaRoche had some interesting comments on the pitch Avilan got him with. He said Avilan always threw a four-seamer that was straight until that pitch. On that pitch he threw a two-seamer that looked like it was coming in over the plate but instead bore in on his hands.

That certainly helps explain LaRoche's swing on that pitch, given context and result; it's also impressive that Avilan could make that sort of crafty adjustment in an extremely tight spot.

Uggla is getting on base 30,9% of the time; ignoring the walk is the same as a hit little league line.

I have a feeling you won't listen to defensive stats, but either way no one can reasonable say Uggla is anywhere close to a good or average defender. He's at -13 DRS this year.

Then again some people are saying Chris Johnson isn't a bad defender when he's clearly awful.

I'm gonna go ahead and not take seriously the opinions on second basemen of a guy who calls himself "Giles fan." Marcus Giles was terrible. Go watch the Gnats.

Neither CJ or Uggla are AWFUL.

They aren't elite, both are ok and can hold their own.

He is right on Uggla, he's near the league lead in walks.

According to MLB.com they were all three two-seamers (first 94 mph, second 93 mph, third 94 mph).

- I can see it both ways here. Did they think Julio WANTED to put the go-ahead run on base, in a 1-run game with 1 out, with the heart of their order coming up? I don't know.

- Julio has already hit 11 batters this year, was it intentional, eh, maybe not, maybe so.

- I don't mind Uggla, he's a great teammate, he hustles on every play. Yes, he K's too much, and isn't a great hitter. His defense has been surprisingly better than expected. I still hope he has one hot streak in him so we can trade him this winter, and LaStella takes over at 2B next year.

- I'm guessing one of our guys gets beamed though, i would guess JUp. If they or we are up big, i'd pull some starters out late in the game and put the backups in, don't wanna risk anything.

- Bryce is a hothead, he's a fiery player, i can understand why he was mad. And this is NOT the team he wants to mess with, we have some big dudes who would put him in his place.

- Very good win though, Julio pitched well, bullpen did it's job. Though LaRoche bailed us out, he swung at Ball 3 when Avilan didn't have nothing left in him. Probably would of walked him.

- Would probably hold out Heyward tonight, and have him back on Friday after some treatment. Nice to see Gattis come through, great piece of hitting there.

Of course they were going to walk Harper in that spot. He's 3-7 with 2 homers and a double (2 bb) off Teheran. Zimmerman, the next batter is a righty and has 0 hits off Teheran and it sets up a DP.

To be fair to Marcus Giles, he put up a 6.5 and a 5.3 fWAR in his career. Uggla has never topped 4.5.

LaRoche bailed us out.

Avilan didn't have much left, got pretty fortunate he swung at that.

Yeah, Uggla is about average, same with Johnson.

Neither are atrocious out there.

Uggla actually better than expected.

One thing is for sure

You can always count gilesfan to be the debbie downer. Instead of talking about how we own the Nats and are dominating, his focus is on convincing us that Uggla and CJohnson are horrible on defense, and that hitting Harper was intentional, and that Mac was giving the middle finger so that Teheran knew to hit Harper...

Its getting pretty bad gilesfan. How about focusing on something that matters...like the Braves record compared to your Nats. No more harping on how awful the Braves players are at something and more praising them on why we are 69-45 and 14.5 games up on your closet fav team.

Fair point, but putting the go-ahead run on base?

I don't see it as that was on purpose.

Should of just did what Avilan did to Werth in the 7th, the ole unintentional, intentional walk.
