GDT - 9.26: Game 2, Chicago Dansby's at Bravos

Not overly excited about the thought of elder in game 3

On the other hand, it'll be great for you, because if we get knocked out in the first round, you can still watch Mookie Betts play 2B in the NLCS and rave about his defense that you've been apparently been watching all season.

I’m glad Vines is starting tomorrow. Him and Winans are the ones I’d like for spot starters in the playoffs. They haven’t been world beaters but they both seem to have pretty good control and Winans has swing and miss stuff. Vines’ changeup is a weapon if he’s locating. They’ve been our best spot starters this year.

At this point, I feel more comfortable with a bullpen game in game 3 than Elder starting. Guy has 9 walks vs. 2K over his last 7.1 IP (2 starts). This also means that the Braves must sell out to go up 2-0 in the series, and avoid turning game 3 into this big "take control of the series" affair. They got the off-days. Use the players accordingly.

Bobby Cox used to say that in any given season, a team will win 40 and lose 40 (games that are not really competitive), and it's their performance in the other 80 games that shapes their season. Make no mistake: this game was in the "lose 40" column for the Braves. They won because the Cubs seemingly didn't want it in their "win 40".
I can accept the argument that it's difficult to get yourself performing at a peak level in game-deciding situations when the outcome of the game has little consequence. Adrenaline just doesn't flow the same way. But the team needs to find a way to get their focus and game mentality back over those last few games. Maybe this win will be the start.

Elder will be game 3 starter, but folks need to realize a game will never get to far out of hand with him on the mound before the pen is called. My problem is, will Twit know how to deploy the pen. If Twit gets him in the 3 or 4th inning with multiple runners on, then he needs to have a high leverage guy ready and treat it as such. However, he will just go with whatever 4th inning guy he deems available.

My plan would be Jessie as an opener (2 innings), Wright/Elder (whoever is pitching better) 3 innings if possible. then close it out with the big guns. But if it is the 4th inning and Elder has bases loaded and 2 outs.. don't go to Jackson.. call in Minter/Hand/prince albert/JJ/yates... Then let that guy go the 5th.. plan to use Jackson/Tonkin when the bottom order comes around..even if that is the 7th or 8th inning.

With injuries biting us twice in 2 years at the end of the season I suspect pitching will be a huge priority in the offseason.

I think he’ll trade for a SP. Cease makes a ton of sense and then another elite BP arm like Hader. We have some good pieces in the bullpen coming back next year but having an elite closer like Hader is always enticing. AA has shown a willingness to spend big on a bp arm so who knows. A lot will depend on Morton. If he retires you have 20 million to put into a SP. Shuster, Dodd, Winyans, Vines, and guys like that are good for a spot start here or there but not for a lengthy period of time. They don’t seem to trust Soroka anymore and Wright is a coin toss. To many question marks for an offense built like ours is. The pitching has to be addressed.
