GDT Sun 7/29, Dodgers

Never mind, this isn't the place for a pissing match that won't change any opinions.

Are both not an offensive term? You can be labeled a redneck simply for being born in my state. I save my outrage for more important things (miss state sports, braves, and saints lol) than dumb insults.

yeah but rednecks have been keeping down blacks and homosexuals for years so it's ok to hate on them

they are far from being equally offensive...this false equivalence is such a stretch

The guy being called a redneck because of the dialect he was born into would likely disagree, especially since one of these things is now a protected class and the other is a socially acceptable punching bag.

in reply to the the deleted post asking for the difference between redneck and some of the other derogatory language:

there are certain terms that have the effect of putting certain groups of human beings into a category I will call sub-human and those terms have over the course of history been used to dehumanize these groups and subject them to treatment that no human being should be subjected to...with all due respect redneck is not one of those terms

Note Nick's big game yesterday. He was clearly buoyed by the decision.

As for Newcomb (and Turner), it's become obvious that Twitter and Facebook are the new "playing with matches" for adolescents and young adults. This isn't about political correctness or the thought police, this is about doing stupid things in a public sphere. If his tweets had taken aim at religion or conservative politics with indelicate language, the reaction would have been similar but coming from a different direction.

Newcomb owned it and apologized. Good for him. He was a kid being a kid and the relaxed (and often cruel) language concerning race and sexuality is (and also was in the 1960s when I was growing up and I am eternally grateful that Twitter and Facebook were not invented at that point) prevalent for that age group in an extremely unsophisticated way. But locker room talk and public broadcast of such talk are two different things and I think this is a lesson for all that once something is in the technosphere, it's like herpes: possibly controllable but there forever. Next thing you know is that scouts will be scouring the web for players' online accounts as well as attending their games and showcases before they draft them.

the only victims appear to be those upset Newcomb is being put in a position where he has to express regret for what he said...how awful

Just found out my fiancee had an away message on AOL Instant Messenger when she was 13 that read "boys go to Jupiter to get more stupider"

Think we're gonna need couples therapy and she's going to need to express some real regret about this.

Agreed. The internet at large has become a cesspool of thought police. It just leads to the further divisiveness in our society and will only keep escalating (see Trea Turner, in this example)

Hey, the truth stands on its own. Don't be a snowflake. (Hope you know I'm kidding).

i haven't had experience with couples therapy so I can't help you with that one...but I will say any woman who recognized at age 13 that "boys are more stupider" is a keeper in my book

Keith Law was asked if the Josh Hader thing was being handled well.

Law said no, not even close.

Of course he never clarified what would have been acceptable. I suppose he should have been suspended for something he did as a teenager? Or just thrown out of the league?

Apologizing and owning it just doesn't seem to be enough these days

Who is? All the offended people who had no idea this existed?

Unless you believe he still is the same immature person he was as a teenager, this will literally do nothing to him other than to remember to always walk on egg shells

Reminds me of the that whole Russia leaking emails thing...

no one really? does there have to be a victim for you? newcomb certainly is not, however. i don't feel bad because he was stupid back then, and because he was too stupid to scrub his tweets after the hader stuff. the people he was calling ***s are much more of a victim than he is, however. is newcomb a victim to you???
i have no idea if he's the same guy he was - neither do you - i'd bet he isn't. so what? can you not learn anything past the age of 19? explains a lot about ya...
