Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

With all do respect... Ruiz does not profile as a singles hitter.

No, but you still need big hitters with power. This idea that the Braves are going to win in the future with a bunch of speedy hitters that make contact is lunacy.

"Power" hitters will be defined differently moving forward.

My point is they aren't really being smart about who they sign. They are just signing everyone they can get their hands on.

Exactly and the potential return on a younger player is greater than an older play because if you hit you get value for the whole life of hte contract.

What irks me was the Braves were willing to give $44M to an aging not-good Markakis - but wouldn't go $62M to a potential* stud

That is a good point. I wouldn't give out either contract, but 62 million to a 29 year old with the possibility of being a really good player makes more sense.

While that is puzzling, you know what you're likely to get out of Markakis. Olivera may not even play this yr depending on his arm. Way too risky to go over 50 million or 4 years for this guy. Let the Dodgers take that risk. I'll bet they'll be dying to be rid of him before the end of year 3.

Like scoring 3 runs for a grand slam?

You don't understand... in 2 years, Jace Peterson will be considered the prototypical power hitter. It's just the way the game is moving. Guys who hit 30 HRs will have no place in the new way the game will be played.

And Markakis needed a relatively serious neck surgery.

I wouldn't necessarily call it "serious." He was never expected to miss much time. There's a fairly decent chance Olivera may miss the entire year and some of next yr. For a team with a budget, you just can't commit that sort of years and money for an unknown who may play zero games in his 1st year.

Ugh, you guys are insufferable. Power has clearly diminished over the past 5 years. If you do not care to acknowledge that and choose to use hyperbole to make it seem like its not happening then fine.

That doesn't make power hitters less valuable. It makes them more valuable.

The Royals did okay with it. I still think we will have a big bat or two by the time 2017 rolls around.

The Royals were a below average offensive team.

They were actually a better team in 13 than 14....but lucky at the right team can make a difference.

No I don't think that is accurate. Regardless, what's CJ getting paid? Bad contracts are gard to move without eating a significant amount of money.

Certainly don't want to argue, but: 62.5-28=34.5/6=5.75.

Perhaps the $28M signing bonus is not accurate, but that is where I came up with an average annual value of less than $6M.

But it does mean that teams are going to have fewer of them, and having guys on base will be even more important whether you have power hitters or not. A double with two guys on base scores more runs that a solo homer. If power hitters are harder to find, teams will get better at scoring runs other ways.
