Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

At this point the idea is that internal development and progression will get us there. I do not think we need a big bopper to win. Give me guys like Peterson/Peraza/hopefully Albies/Ruiz/etc...

You aren't going to win with 8 singles hitting position players.

No, they have not.

Agreed.

Between Olivera, Pablo Fernandez, Guerrero, Arruebarrena, and Puig they've now spent $165.5 million in Cuba recently and have Puig to show for it. That's why I found it so surprising that they didn't ultimately wind up with Moncada. They've been linked to all the young guys, but haven't gone over their bonus pool to sign an impact young player yet.

If I read it right... less than $6M per year after the reported $28M signing bonus.

I would say that makes it a very tradeable contract after the bonus is paid.

Well I'm still waiting to understand how we plan to bring in any impact hitters if we're unwilling to spend. We weren't willing to spend on Heyward or Upton. So then I've been told we're gonna do it via Cuban players... well we weren't willing to spend on them either (right or wrong)... so how do we get a hitter in Atlanta that is better than Jonny Gomes and Callaspo?

I think the Braves are willing to spend for the players they really want. But they have limits to what they can offer. They clearly wanted to keep Heyward. Tried to extend him at different times, but ultimately Heyward wanted an amount that the Braves were just not comfortable going to given his injury history and inconsistent bat. Had Heyward broken out in 2014 instead of taking a step back with the bat, then it's entirely possible he'd be here with a new fat contract.

I think it's clear they are going to be more careful going forward with how they spend their money. They don't want another albatross like Upton, Uggla, or Lowe. But it would seem the smartest thing to do would be to use our newly added pitching depth to trade for young hitting talent and try to extend them to a team friendly deal.

That number is just amazing. Evil Empire 2.0.

@BNightengale
The #Dodgers 40-man roster payroll soars to over $270 million in 2015 after Olivera signing, with $30 million going to players traded away.

No I don't think that is accurate. Regardless, what's CJ getting paid? Bad contracts are gard to move without eating a significant amount of money.

This is exactly the reason the Braves tried to do what they did, but the Dodgers just beat them. Straight up. :Sad: Disappointing, in a lot of ways, though I'm glad we can move on.
