Hector Olivera signs with the Dodgers

Maybe years ago but I don't think that's true anymore.

Over the years, many, many times, I've had to point out that Gammons has zero insight on the Braves and has been wrong more often than a Chattanooga weatherman. He is no kind of source for the Braves. The guy I've watched for true has been Dave Nightengale.

Agreed. Plus it seems in recent years Gammons has been wrong on a lot of non-Braves related reports too. I am pretty someone here (maybe you or Hawk?) noted this as well.

Are the Braves planning to be big July 2nd players? I’ve seen some speculation from you and others that they might go over the limits.

Kiley McDaniel: Yes, they might but by no means have they already committed to doing so yet. They’re in the mix on all these Cubans and in the higher levels July 2 guys as well, so the buzz of them being more aggressive is well founded.

Just an update, Kiley McDaniel is now hearing that the Braves have already "locked up one of the top July 2nd guys" and that he'd have more on that in a week or two. Further, Kiley still thinks we have a shot at Hector Olivera but noted that a bidding war could change things.

Source: Shanks interview right?

Hoping someone can clear this up for me. How could we "lock someone up" when the draft isn't for several more months?

Kiley isn't talking about the MLB Draft, he is talking about verbal agreements with players for the The July 2nd international signing period coming up. These verbal agreements in advance of the signing period happen all the time even though they are against the rules.

Thanks for posting this, that's good news on July 2. I'd like to see the Braves get really aggressive and exceed the bonus pool if they are able to attract significant talent.

Listened to the Shanks interview and Kiley said he thinks we're the favorites for Olivera if the price stays in the $20 - $35m range. It all probably comes down to how much the Dodgers want him. If they decide they really want him, it's Game Over for us.

I would guess so. Dodgers will overpay now. But Moncada did not get what some thought so maybe that means Olivera comes in within the Braves price constraints.

Agreed on all accounts.

You have to figure Olivera gets cleared to sign this week. If not, the league is putting him and the pursuing teams in a really tough situation since position players will start to report middle of this week.

That's probably bad news for us re: Olivera, no?

I'd certainly imagine so - a $65 million investment in a 19 year old Moncada would certainly seem to be a better use of resources given our current situation than $30+ million for a 29 year old Olivera with health questions.

I said before that I think it's best to avoid Olivera - especially at that price. The Red Sox are now out on Vladimir Gutierrez and Yadier Alvares since they can't sign until the upcoming period. Kinda have to imagine that the Dodgers will be the spot for Olivera and the Cubs as the frontrunner for at least one of those Pitchers (if not both). If the Rangers (and/or Yankees) jump in on the other, that takes away most of the usual suspects over the next two years and allows the rest of the teams the opportunity to scoop up ANY emerging talent in the near future.

If Hart & Company weren't "all-in" on Moncada, it's probably best to let them blow it out now and try to get players in the next two years at much lower rates.
