Hello, Atlanta

The downside of this board is it makes a lot of people feel like they are hands-down experts on everything. I thought it was a great read and brought back memories of me watching TBS every night. It's nice to know at least someone will have that passion while wearing the uniform.

I can see the complaint angle on the trade due to the financial commitment, but I think it has more to do with the disappointment with other moves than with the acquisition of Kemp. In most critiques of where the Braves stand now, the glaring lack of power on the team (and in the upper minors) is one of the most pertinent points. Kemp should supply that. He may be the resurrection of Pat Burrell in LF, but if Kemp gets his 4 ABs and then turns LF over to a defensive replacement when there's a lead, I don't see what the problem really is here.

Thanks for posting the story.

I'm curious. If Kemp gives Atlanta three years of .830 OPS or better and plays slightly below average defense, mitigated somewhat by Mallex or Ender in CF beside him, will those who say he is horrible feel like the trade is pretty okay, or is it still going to be Olivera bad? If he gives .730 with bad defense, I know it will be "we told you so", and I know that's a possibility. I'm just wondering what it will take to make folks happy, or if that's impossible.

He would need to be worth about 1 WAR a year for his performance to be worth the money the Braves added on. An 830 OPS with below average defense most certainly gets him there. 730 OPS with bad defense won't.

FF is at .284/.367/.514 and Markakis is at .265/.345/.369... It'll be interesting to see how those numbers change with kemp being added to the lineup.

I think that's a realistic expectation.

If I'm misty-eyed about anything it's this:

Home: .243/.271/.413

Road: .277/.298/.555

Get him out of the San Diego abyss and he's a dang good offensive weapon, OBP notwithstanding. The other point is that for his career, his walk ratio has been pretty good. The last year appears to be an outlier.

Petco has actually been far less of a pitchers park than I realized over the past several years. In terms of homeruns, they are in the 19-21 range.

If he can provide 5-6 WAR over the next 3 years while not preventing the acquisition of other players, then the deal isn't terrible.

57 games left, so it isn't a terribly small sample size. If I weren't lazy, I'd keep up Markakis and FF's stats till the end of the season starting tonight and compare to above lines.

Baseball ref and fangraphs do this for you. You can go to the game logs for each player and select a date range to see their stats for that time period.
