Is "2017" a huge lie?

I have a sinking suspicion that the "building for 2017" is just a smoke screen for tearing down the roster for an extended period time and taking profits from the new Stadium. There are no signs that the team is anything but a last place team over the next two years.

yes

They originally thought they could do it, I'm sure. But a massive mis-calculation of prioritizing pitching over bats will sink us into mediocrity for years.

They needed to invest in one of Heyward or Upton.

They thought they could stock up on pitching and rebuild the offense via trades. After taking steps toward that goal, the true market value of offense proved much higher than they had anticipated (and, unfortunately, higher than they had valued our own offensive players). Now they are stuck with buying pitching while offense is the hot commodity and hoping that the respective values will flip. The only way the magical 2017 is happening is if that value flip takes place during the winter meetings or perhaps at the 2016 deadline.

One that many on here saw coming. Coppy even acknowledged yesterday that nobody was offering that up for Simmons. Good young position players simply aren't getting traded (unless they are with the Braves or A's)

They theoretically can still invest in either of those right now, though I don't see it happening.

Probably. But we need to quickly figure out which SP's we need to build around. Miller/Teheran/Wisler should go nowhere. As for prospects we should not trade Folty, Newcomb, Fried. All other pitchers should be shopped.

We need to let Folty get a full season developing in the rotation this year. He has way too much upside and deserves a long leash developing as a starter but I'm afraid the FO is going to move him to the pen after the simmons deal. But Folty/Newcomb/Fried all have the top of the rotation upside we've wanted.

We could be straight beast in a few years when the young talent starts to blossom, but I see it as likely to be rather more painful in the interim. The more I watched last season, the more I wished they'd gone the all-in route and traded more assets. After my initial emotional reaction to the Tron deal, I couldn't argue the logic of it. We're not close to competing.

of course part of the decision to tear everything down and cut salary was so they could help pay for the new stadium. it sucks but ultimately could be a win win if they do this right and we live long enough.

problem is, i wonder if anybody will still care in four years.

This is very interesting to say the least considering that Atlanta is not a sports town, let alone a baseball town as it is, outside of college football. They were talking about this on MLBnetwork the other day with the Astros, which Houston was a great baseball city back in the day that invested heavily in the Astros, but since their teardown years back, they have had a hard time generating interest again in the ballclub despite the fact that they have rebuilt and are contenders currently.

I would add Kolby to that list as well, but he is so new, we wouldn't trade him anyway... just saying. I completely agree on Folty.

Hate the trade, but don't hate the return.

Pretty obvious that 2017 isn't going to be our year which makes me hate the Olivera trade that I was initially okay with.

In a strange way, I admire the FO for having a clear plan and having the guts to follow through with it. I don't agree with the overall strategy and a few of the interim moves don't make sense on their own.

I think the plan now is to hope Olivera plays well this year and we look to trade him for a good package and hope that Markakis hits well again and we can send him off to some team that needs help at the deadline. I like embracing a complete tear down if it means we actually tear down.

The only thing it sucks is that we probably won't have a team as fun to watch as the 2013 Braves even if this works out.

I wonder what kind of package the O's might put together for Markakis....the city was torn apart when he left, I wonder if they would take him back at 3/33m

With the rebuild where it is at I am not buying into 2017 what so ever. As I see it our best bet IF they stay put with the Braves won't come until 2019 at the earliest, that is when I see Austin Riley, Albies, Allard, Fried, Davidson, and others will be ready to contribute. It might even be 2020 before they are established and seasoned enough to be top tier as a team.

"I never lie, never have, never will, you can bet your house on it, we are building and will continue working on a championship caliber club, full of championship caliber players. Take my word, Braves fan, this will indeed be a Brave New World, we're back to the Braves way, and the Braves way has never been better, stronger, and exciting. We have assembled the greatest single front office in the history of major league baseball to foresee and direct all of this, and we will get through this, and we will win. Has anyone see what I did in KC? in Atlanta? I'm the best, and there never will be anyone better. We will get the job done. It just probably won't be in my lifetime, but we will get the job done. Take my word for it, we will not follow through on our promises, but I promise the end result will be, I don't know what it will be, but trust me championship caliber players and wasn't that run in Atlanta great in the mid 90's? That's not what I said, what I said, is I unequivelantly know what our plan is, we are sticking to the plan, and it is going to be great. Be patient Braves fans and feel fortunate, only in Atlanta do you get a new state of the art ballpark every 20 years. Liberty has shown a committment to win, and will continue to do so, and I only say this, because they told me I had to say this, and really that's all that matters, but we will have great flexbility going forward inside of a very tight budgetary framework."

2 trades that could take the offense a big step towards it being tons better. Jenkins, Bethancourt, and Dustin Peterson for Lucroy. Teheran, Maybin and Manny for Soler and Baez (may take us adding another piece) but Adding those 3 to our offense would be huge. They may wanna substitute Baez for Castro but that would work to.

As all here know, I was hopeful that the Braves continued the churn. So in theory I am ok with moving Simmons. I am even ok with them moving him for pitching IF they don't stop there and they go get some young controllable bats. But, I'm not convinced they will. It's almost like the Braves are Smeagle and pitching is there "preciouses."

The problem that I have is that there ARE bats available as evidenced by trades at the deadline. It's just that you have to look in the right places and ask for the right things. I'm sure that if the Braves asked the Dodgers for Seager in any Simmons talks, they were told "no." Now that Seager has played at the ML level and been exposed to the fan base there would be no way they would trade him (if they EVER would), and I was a strong advocate for going for him this time last year all the way up to the point he made his debut. But, now that he has shown his promise, no way they move him.

I think the place you find bats is: 1. You don't ask for bats that already have ML experience, no matter how much or little. 2. You target clubs who have needs and who have players who are blocked at the ML level by young stars who are controllable or are behind other prospects within the organization (Colorado has Arrenando so McMahon should be available), the Pirates have McCutchen so Meadows should be available, the Indians have Zimmer and Bradley so Frazier might be available. 3. You target large market clubs who can just go buy their bats like Heyward or Upton so if the Yankees get Heyward they could afford to move Judge.

I, for one, don't think that is what is happening.

I think the plan is still 2017. I think we're only on the hook for Teheran, Freeman and Olivera. Then you've got really only Shelby Miller as a big Arb eligible player.

So we'll say the Braves have about 50 Million tied up in 2017 if you count some of the cheaper players like Jace or Mallex. That leaves maybe about 70 million to spend in 2017. The roster is going to look hilariously different in 2017 then it does right now. There's no telling who we could get.

There were a lot of big time offensive players moved last season, so you really don't know what could happen or who might be available.

The Braves traded 3 of them
