Jace Peterson

I guess you are the same person your whole life and can never learn. Ok.

Its certainly not that. If the Braves were to sign....say Justin Upton next year, you would be hyping it up despite him not fitting the type of player you like (this year).

I fully understand it. Which is why I almost didn't respond to your ridiculous example. What is the standard deviation of runs scored by mlb teams?

I don't think you can just the SD based on all teams. Since we are using specialized cases we would have to see how much of an impact a high SLG team has on the SD.

Ok, lets just go crazy extreme case here:

Team scores 567 runs in 1 game (Lets just say they win that game) They then get shutout the remaining 161 games. That team is going to lose more than a team that averages 3 runs a game and gets 3 runs a game.

Of course this example is ridiculous but to not consider variation is not too bright IMO.

There is something to be said for variation, but extreme variation is different from slight variation. A team that averages 5 runs a game over 5 games, but gets shut out twice in those five games and scores over 8 runs a game in the other 3 is going to win 60% of their games.

The other key factor here is removing the assumption that slugging % leads to higher variation. Until you know that, you can't brandish that as truth.

I never wanted to trade UPton as is. My record is clear. I wanted him signed long term WAY before Jason. But, now that he is traded I'm happy with what we got.

I'm not trying to say its truth. I only state my homer opinions on this board.

I suppose we can expect additional evolution from you if any of your current favs disappoint. The minimize disappointment approach to being a fan is an interesting one that i had never thought about. The 1970s were the golden era for that kind of fan.

I was once told that the most important thing to cultivate an intelligent mind is to try to disprove your own beliefs because this is essentially the heart of scientific discovery. I think you, moreso than any poster on this board not named BRule, would stand to benefit the most from this.

So why are we cutting Peterson down because right now he's hitting the ball and getting on base? I absolutely hate BABIP and how people try and use it against players. I don't like Peterson, but admit that I have hardly seen him play. Right now he's hitting the ball and getting on base. Why say he's lucky.

There he is! Mr. "I don't watch the games, but you guys are wrong"

We all have a responsibility for tamping down expectatios about Peterson. That way the risk of disappointment is minimized.

But we have to be careful not to overdo it. Otherwise we risk disappointment of heywardesque proportions.

Also we have to hope that Peterson doesn't become a truly elite defensive player so the defensive stats don't rate him too high to where he is overvalued and we can't extend him.

In a perfect world Jace Peterson would be very good but highly underrated. Except by those of us in the know.

Kind of the opposite of Heyward who isn't very good but overrated and a disappointment relative to our expectations.
