Jace Peterson

I know Josh Donaldson probably isn't available but he only has a couple of more years left before he's a FA. I'd make them a super strong offer and see if they bite. Miller, Wood, Wisler, and Peraza would Def get their attention.

There ya go - fixed it for ya.

Toronto likely might not move Donaldson for that either, and definitely wouldn't be interested in Peraza (so you might have to substitute Mallex Smith for him) as a 2B if/when Devon Travis comes back - he's in the middle of a breakout season and can't play CF.

Toronto trades Donaldson the day AFTER the Angels trade Mike Trout.

Jace is now equal in fWAR to J-Up.
I don't think he's been as valuable, no. But if you're someone that subscribes to the thought Heyward is better than Freeman because of his defense, then Jace has been close to J-Up.

There's a reason, wonky defense. Justin is pacing a -21.5 UZR in LF. He's never finished a season with an UZR below -10. Odds are that levels at some point.

If Peterson keeps doing what he's been doing he'll be very valuable. His offense is well above average at 2B, his defense is great for 2B and he's an above average baserunner. All those things would likely make him a 3-4 WAR player. Wihch Justin is pacing with his -21.5 defense. Now I think Justin normalizes that and becomes a better defender statistically speaking and Peterson's offensive numbers are due for a dip most likely. But if they both keep up where they're at, Peterson will be about equal to Justin. In a tie you almost always give the advantage to the better offensive player.

then you need to remember they play different positions. Anyone with Jason's mobility wouldn't be playing 1B.

Well, Justin's defense does really stink, and apparently it's getting worse.
bWAR has Justin a good bit higher, which is probably more accurate.
I don't necessarily expect Jace's offense to decline, either. It might only get better. He was a very good minor league hitter and has been improving as the season goes on.

Nothing about Upton defensive numbers are wonky. He is a bad defensive player but great offensive player.

As I've said many times...in hindsight Upton for a Peterson would have been a great deal for the Braves.

Why again should Petersons numbers regress?

He's won me over, and I agree; just from watching him, I don't see anything that would suggest he's been particularly lucky so far. He has a good approach at the plate, his pitch recognition seems to be good, and he makes consistently hard contact. I actually think there's reason to believe his power will continue to improve.

His defense has been far better than I think anyone expected, and while he needs to become a better baserunner, he has the tools to succeed there, too. I'm on board with him as our 2B of the future.

From the eye test - he doesn't look like a great defender to me. He's made some spectacular players, but he is awkward a lot.

But the numbers suggest otherwise

He has tremendous range and turns the DP very well. Balls hit right at him I think he is more concerned with putting his body in front of hte ball as opposed to picking it clean.

Yeah, I think the needle is starting to move more toward possible starting second baseman as opposed to possible utility man.
