Jason Heyward Open to Extension w/ Cardinals

The only reason to sign an extension now is to stick it to the Braves.

He's so close to FA that he should go. He isn't coming off a great offensive year.

He's going to sign for a ton of money. Then he's going to be a message board debate topic for his entire 10 year contract when he never really hits like you'd expect.

And this is why I was ok with not re-signing him. His value is tied to attributes that may not be accurately measured right now.

I was more upset about not extending Upton but the dynamic with his brother here had to make things uncomfortable.

I'm ok with it too.

I understand when people talk about runs saved, war, etc. I just don't buy it. I don't buy the formula as accurate. I do put a premium up the middle vs Right field.

But I get why ppl love him. I really liked him and wanted him to be a Brave. Just not for the money he'll get, even though it's not my money.

But we've been round and round on this. I understand a lot of ppl disagree and disagree strongly.

Depends on the situation....letting a 25 year old go, that hasn't even hit his prime yet, without even offering a contract is pretty indefensible. I mean, we offered Markakis 11 mil a year for 4 years. We couldn't offer Jason 20? Take away the Markakis signing and maybe I can buy it...

That's an entirely different discussion. It's a constant truth that giving Heyward X amount of dollars has an opportunity costs of X amount of dollars.

It's totally reasonable to argue Miller, Jenkins + Heyward's money saved from his extension > Jason Heyward's new contract + Walden.

100% defensible (either way)

Unless you plan on offering him 10 M a year? How the **** do you know he won't sign it? They never even talked!

You think what they did instead was NOT insulting to the fanbase?
Our "GM" said he "assumed" Heyward wouldn't be interested. What a joke. Our team deserves to suck for years for this incompetence.

Obviously not to those who aren't still crying in their cereal over it. Dale Murphy was traded. Rafael Furcal left. Andruw Jones left. Tom Glavine left. John Smoltz left. Brian McCann left.

Get over it folks - the only people still whining about it sound like a bunch of 10 year olds.

It seems the FO defenders are assuming in this thread just as much as the FO assumed in these "negotiations."

Can't wait until he signs a contract way out of our price range so this whole bickering fest goes away for good.

It doesn't matter what he signs for. The arguments will still be made that the Braves should have kept him.

So your counterpoint is to name 5 players who left in free agency, and one player who was traded way out of his prime. Good comp.

They are a tenacious lot though. Got to give that to them.

All of those moves actually made sense.

If you don't want to read people whining like a 10 year old, message boards are not the place for you.

A year away from losing him FA and it didn't make sense to trade him? We can debate till we are in blue in the face as to how the Heyward situation was mishandled for the first five years but the bottom line was that the Braves were looking at losing a damn good player at the end of the year for just a late first round pick. I think the move made perfect sense.

So we will never be able to sign a primer player ever again? Why is it a foregone conclusion he was gone?

Not when you had a complete albatross of BJ Upton on your books. Braves are not a big market team. It is what it is.

Also, the debate on whether Heyward is a premier player is not a closed one.

OK. If only he could be as good as Steven Adams or Jeff Francouer!
