Kemp and the Quest for 1 bWAR

Having a potential and somewhat likely albatross on your roster should be avoided if at all possible. I like Kemp a lot, but he has been injury prone or just seemed to lack interest at times. If someone will take his entire contract and give us a decent player as well, we should definitely do it.

Resource allocation suggests that braves might be better off spending 18m on a more long term piece at SP or 3B perhaps.

Counting on Kemp to be a major part of a 2019 run is asking a lot.

So Kemp (or Markakis) plus a couple pitching prospects for Seager or Longoria?

What is the significance of 18m when the roster is projected to be filled with so many internal candidates making next to nothing?

I doubt we would sign anyone to a big contract because we don't want to loose a pick. We "could" take on a big contract to fill another place we really need help, that the farm can't provide any help short term (like third base).

What does it matter if he is opsing over 900?

He posted impressive numbers at a young age in a pitchers park. If he builds on that with more development. I don't think hitting a certain threshold holds any more value than visible improvement by our scouts.

Well my take is a Peterson who puts up a .700 OPS with rave reviews from the scouts is less interesting as a candidate for a major league corner outfield position than one who puts up a .900 OPS in Gwinnett with lukewarm reviews from the scouts.

For a guy in AAA to interest me as a corner outfielder he has to rake.

Btw he was at .774 in Mississippi last year. A solid result in a tough hitting environment. But not quite enough for me to say he is likely to hold down a corner outfield spot in the majors.

That's what I see. Maybe a team like the sox gives us a talent to take on panda. We aren't getting a top 5 guy. Maybe if you give up Tehran and take on panda you can get someone. Even sox aren't giving up devers

Most ppl I've read say he is easily over replacement level and can hit. Iirc Klaw had him at 2+ war . Really valuable esp pre arb. Not a star but maybe a cheap markakis

What's the likelihood he keeps it up and stays healthy over the next 2+ years? If his OPS falls into the .850 OPS range or lower, he won't be very valuable and will be near impossible to move without eating money.

Its not that Kemp can't be a valuable piece. It's his contract that's the problem. If we have the chance to move him and pick up a decent player or two, we'd be fools not to do it.

Where is our long term power bat option otherwise?

This has turned out well so far. I hope we maximize the trade by flipping Kemp for a package that can help the 2020 team.

I would focus more on the 2021 team. 2020 has been copyrighted by another poster here. Would not want to infringe.

you think he will be in 2019?

That's just the deal. If this season is lost (you have to think it is), then in keeping him...you are betting he can stay healthy and keep producing the same. Although I think he will remain productive....I don't see him doing what he is this year. If we could move even most of his contract and gain a prospect...it would be a MAJOR win. It would clear most or all of the HO money and also give us Wentz and whatever prospect we gain in the trade. It would almost offset the prospects we gave up... not completely, but close. It would literally "almost" erase one of the worst trades in Braves history.
