Matthew 24

I was one of them. I went to 12 years of Catholic School and went to church basically every sunday until I graduated High School. As far as what turned me off. I think in the end the quality of catholic school I went to was a huge part. The oddly cultic experience became more clear and I had some decent religion teachers who touched on the issues I had but couldn't rightly refute me.

I think being good and agnostic is a perfectly fine way of living life.

Sounds like there's more to the story as why you went away from the Catholic church.

Do you agree that current events around the globe are a coincidence, or mean something will be happening? I don't think we in North America see it as clearly as we haven't had the horrors (yet) that other regions have digressed to.

Honestly, the world is probably more peaceful then it's ever been. I mean just 70 years ago we were bitter enemies with Japan and Germany. Nobody would ever know it these days. Not to long ago we were close to nuke war with Russia. While we're obviously not the best of friends my any means, it's hard to imagine nuke war with Russia now. China is becoming a capitalist society and war with them seems highly unlikely because of that. Capitalism is a great macro peace maker.

I think it's just we see all this crap going on in the world and being reported by the media and we think it is really hitting the fan now, when in reality it's not as bad as it was not too long ago.

Israel by the way is suddenly backed by a few muslim nations which I reference I think with one of Bedell's posts on this board but I digress.

You gotta be careful with this end world stuff. Just stick with the basic message of the new testament, imo and just stay away from the rapture and all that stuff. It just isn't something to be that concerned with. Nobody knows what's going to happen except for the Good Lord, if he exists... I myself am agnostic like Zito.

Don't let Dalyn get to you. He likes to stroke his ego sometimes, amongst other things.

And I have to assume this post is about rapture like stuff, because the op is gone, so sorry about that post above if it isn't.

You jump on me for voicing my opinion, and then when I point out that I find your opinion just as offensive as you find mine, suddenly you are the victim? How does that work exactly?

Have you ever met a christian before?

They're always the victim.

The ritualistic things they do is so weird to me.

I said sh*t. Come on...

As it so happens, I often find religious discussions interesting, too (regardless of whether or not I believe in a god). I've read the bible cover to cover 10+ times, spent my childhood in a Christian school, and grew up in a pastor's home. What I find OFFENSIVE is you religious people who use every atrocity around the world as a recruitment tool, and then play the victim card when someone calls you on it.

Slightly off topic, but I wasn't raised in a church. Why is it that pastors believe funerals are the place for recruiting? The last few funerals I've been too where like signing day in the SEC, pulling out all the stops. I went to one and the pastor asked everyone that was saved to raise their hands. (he told everyone to close their eyes, it was just between god and them) He then said I see a few hands not up......if you want to see so and so again, you will need to be saved. Went on and on about living in mansions in heaven and yada yada yada. It was a solid 30 minute sales pitch.

I guess I was raised wrong thinking funerals were to honor the deceased.

I find it amusing. Sound like the Borg when doing their what you call them...the homma something.

I do not follow a religion but I go to a Catholic church for my wife and children. I am fortunate that the priests' leaves alone and respect my standing with them and the church. Now other religions, it is different, full court press and they get offended when I say "I do not believe in man made religion". Because I don't, they all have different ways of controlling and I refuse to be control by any religion or faction.

I've never been to a funeral like that. If it was for my family member I'd probably have a talk with the pastor on the side after. I'm a dick but I wouldn't try to exploit someone's sorrow with a promise I can't back up.

Went to a catholic church this weekend and they came around with go-go gadget type basket things for people to put money in. I wonder how many people that are hurting financially contribute to that.

This is probably rhetorical, but in case it isn't: vulnerability (usually from fear). They use a time when people are vulnerable and death (often fear of dying or fear of never seeing lost ones again) is foremost in their mind. It is another form of what I was talking about. It's really disgusting if you stop to think about it for even a minute.

Interesting. So are you one of those who had so much religion bestowed and "forced" upon them, that it made you turn away?

Sounds like you don't really believe in religion or a god for that matter. Just interested to know if being surrounded by that life 24/7, ultimately turned you away or if breaking away from it made you open up.

You could argue that, sure, and I think it played a part in the beginning, but it's what I learned reading the bible and being around religion for so long that helped mature my decision.

I don't believe in a god, and, though I think there are many fine religious folks out there, I despise religion. Those fine folks can be just as fine on their own without helping oil the workings of such a vicious machine.
