Megathread: Braves lose Maitan, Bae and 10+ plus International Sanctions.

From Gammons:

When the sanctions against the Braves are revealed and they lose some international signings, one member of the organization who had nothing to do with the violations says that an example is that one Asian infielder that was signed got a $300,000 bonus that kept them within the allotment borders, but he was promised another $300,000 in 2018 that would have been paid under the table. They also expect to lose infielder Kevin Maitan, who received $5M, but the new order Braves are not concerned, feeling Maitan was no worth the money or the hype.

This is the exact kind of “he really isn’t that great” spin we should expect if the Braves do lose Maitan.

Having said that, this may the time we can officially write Shanks off and never give him another thought.

Maitan is freaking 17 years old. Shows the kind of patience you have if you don't want to see it through with him. He might not be great, but you need more than one season to see...one.

Different regime trying to temper disappointment with the fan base. What are you expecting?

I don't think they'll take Maitan simply because it would be truly unprecedented. I think they take some lesser prospects but when the Red Sox were punished they lost no one of any real significance.

I think they lose some prospects but not Maitan, mainly because it encourages latin prospects/trainers to try and bend the law because Maitan will get 2 huge paydays.

If they have the Braves dead to rights on cheating to get Maitan then I don't see why anyone would think they would get to keep him except its been awhile.

Any punishment that lets you keep a player you cheated to get doesn't deter future conduct.

I don’t get why the players aren’t disciplined also.

Maitan probably has less than half his bonus sitting in a bank account after he paid taxes and all the folks involved took their cut. He may not even be a millionaire anymore.

How exactly is he going to pay the bonus back? You think MLB has the authority to audit his finances to take back whatever is left?

I’ve been holding out hope that we get to keep Maitan but I’m afraid he’s gone. I hope Contreras doesn’t go to he seems like he could be a stud catcher like his brother. Severino and Gutierrez will probably be gone to. Man this sucks.
