Michael Harris Extension Reportedly Coming

Oh my god how does AA keep doing this

Mets fans right now:

Yeah that’s a pretty good deal for us. I like the way they set the money up per year and he should start some defensive decline when the deal is ending so win for us.

Braves have built the culture where if you are a young player you want to sign this long term team friendly contract. Much easier to sign up knowing that you get to play with your buddies for a decade.

This all day. Atlanta has to be one of the most desirable places to play in the majors. You know you’re gonna be competitive for a long period of time and with the same people.

So....if Swanson bounces and Grissom takes over SS and plays well. Is he signing an extension next off season to stay with his buddy Money Mike?

I’d say no doubt. Hopefully he plays well enough to make AA have to consider it. Hopefully Fried gets one next. Contreras could be next.

Too bad for Swanson he was a late bloomer because he of all players would have been the one to sign one of these extensions.

The Mets fans, Phillies fans, Gnats fans, and Marlins fan are losing their minds over this. Have seen a Phillies fan on Twitter calling for the Braves to be investigated. The are not happy.

And I’m here for it

Phillies fans mad they tried this with Kingery and it backfired

That's exactly what it was. The plus defense that Frenchy showed was with his arm. The thing with that is that you really need people running on you consistently to get the most out of it as far as WAR numbers go.

1) Arm was a big part of his game, but for the first few years Frenchy was also an all around plus defender (+43 DRS, only +21 from his arm, in his first 3 years).

2) WAR credits you for the guys who don't run.

I’m guessing the deal breaks down as

2023: $1M pre arb
2024: $1M pre arb
2025: $5M arb 1
2026: $10M arb 2
2027: $14M arb 3
2028: $14M arb 4
2029: $14M FA 1
2030: $14M FA 2
2031: $15M option

Turns out they front loaded it quite a bit more than I expected. Good for Harris.

2023: $5M pre arb
2024: $5M pre arb
2025: $8M arb 1
2026: $8M arb 2
2027: $9M arb 3
2028: $10M arb 4
2029: $10M FA 1
2030: $12M FA 2
2031: $15M option
2032: $20M option

Both options have a $5M buyout.

A good deal by itself, and now AA has locked in even more of the core. Folks are masterbating to the list of controlled players now, and hopefully they feel the same way in 3-4 years. AA has given up pretty much all roster flexibility for the next decade, and hopefully that core keeps producing. If it doesn’t produce AA will have no way to augment the roster and will likely be fired as the Braves kick off a long rebuild.

Sure, but two more WS titles in the near future and none of it matters, right?

Idk some of those AAVs will still be market or below in a few years … they shouldn’t be dead anyway unless they implode

If Harris, Acuna, Riley, Olson, and Albies are all bad then the Braves are stuck. But I think a more likely scenario is a couple under perform, a couple overperform. If the Braves are terrible, they should be able to very easily move the over performers to kick off the next stage of a rebuild.

I don’t think is any more risky than signing signing free agents. At least there’s a higher probability you get incredible surplus value that’s near impossible to find in free agency. IMO, it makes more sense for the Braves to spend this way if they aren’t going to shop at the top of the market

The raise for Harris puts the 2023 payroll right around $180M with a massive hole at SS, and LF still a mess mostly filled by Rosario.

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if AA gave SS to Grissom and resigned Grossman for LF, nor would I be surprised if he gave Correa $300M. Literally nothing would surprise me this off-season to fill SS and LF.

It will be another interesting off-season. Fried will get his contract. I’ll be surprised if he’s not extended before Opening Day 2023. The question is then Dansby. It’s easy to say just let him go and let Grissom take over SS. But at least right now, I see Swanson returning (though I of course could be wrong). If that happens, then I think Grissom becomes an outfielder and moves to left. We’ve all heard now that the Braves were trying to unload Ozuna at the deadline. I look for the Braves to unload him in the off-season. In that regard, we’ll have to see how much money would have to be sent to whoever takes on Ozuna.
