Minor league thread

so what are you giving up to get him now?

I just don't see a piece that I would move to get him now. It is going to cost more. At the deadline, when his babip is likely down and they have to move him, then he's cheap.

I said I wouldn't give shuster for him. I wouldn't give up any of our very few bats for him. I can only think about giving up some of our AAAA arms for the guy.

The good news is he plays for the Royals, and they probably overvalue guys like Waters.

Not sure DMGM would take Waters for him - he probably feels the same way many of us do about him - but if Waters would get it done this early there shouldn't be a second of hesitation IMO. With Smith/Jansen/Duvall coming off the books this winter (and the lack of OF help from within on the way), I'd think Benintendi's high-contact and low K-rate profile would be exactly the type of candidate AA should look for to fill LF for the next 3 years after 2022. If you could sign he and Dansby to reasonable 3 year deals the entire offense other than d'Arnaud would be controlled through 2025, leaving the only budget juggling to be done with the pitching staff - and that becomes a little easier with Morton coming off either this winter or next.

As for Russ' hesitation about going as far as Shuster for him, I get it. However, if the organization feels like he's another in the long line of AAAA arms that simply hasn't had the chance to be exposed yet I'd dangle him if that's what gets you a window to hammer out a 3 year deal with Benintendi instead of waiting until this winter. His current BABIP is high, sure, but there's enough data on him now to feel like you're getting a .330-ish wOBA/110-ish wRC+ guy at worst. That's a pretty significant upgrade over your other options PLUS he's another LH bat that definitely won't hurt you defensively as icing on the cake.

Malloy with 3 homers in the last 5 games while reaching base 11 times. He’s got the pop without the high K rate.

I know I'm higher on waters than you, but would you deal waters for anyone on the royals?

I would not. If they'd take Ozuna's contract....maybe... probably not.

If you use guys like shuster and waters on a guy like benentindi, we don't have any bullets to get anything done the next several years. I'm not a big shuster guy, but calling him a AAAA guy now seems unfair.

I do not put waters and shuster in the Ynoa, Touki, Davidson, Elder category. I don't even put them in the Muller category. I think they are better than that.

I don't think Waters has any real value, so I would trade him for whatever AA needs.

Benintendi is a perfectly good OF target.

That's the reason I explained it the way I did. I understand YOU may not put them in that category - what we don't know is whether Alex puts them in that category. The risk you run with Shuster is that you lose whatever value he has as you move him further up the ladder. All 4 of the Pitchers you listed have BETTER stuff, and no one is taking them in a deal for a difference-maker. None of the arms currently in the system (other than potentially Strider, Smith-Shawver, and Schwellenbach) project as better than a #4 at best - everybody has guys like that in their system. The goal is to trade guys like that BEFORE everyone else realizes that's their ceiling - not after they've shown that that's what their ceiling will be.

Remember - the Braves gave up Andrelton for the same guy they got Chavez for when they traded him away after everyone had plenty of evidence that he had peaked.

They need to leave Muller in AAA all year and hope he has a similar confidence boost as Wright received.
Wright of two years ago gives up 2 runs in the first and he isn't making it out of the 3rd. The current version of Wright gives up 3 straight hits and a wild pitch to start the game and finds himself down 2 runs without a single out. He buckles down and gets 24 outs in the next 26 plate appearances.
Give Muller a dose of that stuff.

Give all of those AAAA arms a dose of that stuff.

Braves OF prospect Drew Waters went 4-for-5 with a homer for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday.
It’s the fourth homer of the season for Waters, and the third in Triple-A with the other coming in his rehab assignment in Rome. The 23-year-old missed time with a hamstring injury, but he’s been relatively solid in his time with the Stripers with a slash of .283/.323/.443 in 88 at-bats. Once considered among the best fantasy prospects in the sport, Waters has seen his stock drop because of contact issues, but he is a player with significant speed as seen in 74 career steals in the minors, and when he does put bat to ball, the contact is often hard. He’s no longer a must-roster fantasy outfielder, but there’s absolutely reason to keep an eye on him.
