Grissom suffers from the "best position player in a bad farm system". He isn't very good, and isn't very valuable, but since he's the best the Braves have he gets though of too highly by fans. He's the modern day Jose Peraza.

Give Peraza some credit. He was a consenus top 100 prospect.

Taking the guy sucks argument is going to be right way more times than it is wrong.

That said. In AAA at 22 years old Grissom is 327/412/494. The last half of the year is even better. He has made some errors at SS. He's 6'2 and 200+ pounds. Likely will grow into more power.

I don't know what his exit velocities are now.

Braves brought him up as a 20-21 y/o without many professional at bats.

He's 5th in the minors in doubles. Walk % going up. Strike out % going down.

I do not think he's in Drew Waters territory.

He’s flawed in a very different way than Waters. Whereas Waters is loaded with tools and natural athleticism but is cursed with a 20 grade approach. Grissom is very skilled and clearly maximizes his more limited tools because he has a great approach. Of the two, I would bet on Grissom sticking around for much longer.

The only position he might fit with the Braves is left field since MIF isn’t an option and Nicky Lopez seems like he fits the Braves needs as utility player better than Grissom. The fact that the Braves have left him at SS suggests to me that the plan is to market him as an offensive first short stop in a trade rather than develop him as the Rosario replacement.

You can easily know his AAA exit velocity numbers if you wanted...they aren't good.

All the projection systems agree that he'd post something around a .120 ISO, which would be something close to Nico Hoerner (who is actually a decent comp if Grissom could play an average MIF position. Maybe he can someday, and maybe he becomes the Braves version of Hoerner.

Nothing we've seen so far suggests he's going to be that good of a defender though.

You're an easy grader. Waters seems to suffer from the million dollar tools/ten-cent head problem. Watched a couple of Royals' games this year and last (nothing else to do). Waters glides out there, but if a player is going to strike out that much, he better hit for a lot more power. He makes Francoeur look selective.

Hard to tell on Grissom. I think he has a fairly high floor with the bat, albeit without a ton of projection. Hard to know where he can play in the field if his bat doesn't project and/or his defense doesn't improve. I am a little surprised the Braves didn't move him around the diamond a little more in Gwinnett, but they must feel (and it's difficult to disagree) that it's premature to make a 22-year-old into a utility player.

At the risk of seeming like I'm piling on a young player, I just have to point out that DSL Braves' RHP prospect Francisco Vicioso hasn't gotten off to a great start in his professional career. After today's game, his ERA now stands at 351.00. He's taken to the mound three times, recorded one out (via strikeout), walked 11 guys, and hit four. On the bright side, he hasn't given up a hit and his K/9 is 27.00.

Every other Braves prospect has come up and fix their minor league flaws. I'm sure someone will flop, but I haven't seen it yet.

Lmao...but on another note Drake (although he still strikes out every game) has brought his average up about 160 points to.212. That's gotta be worth something.....

FCL and DSL teams look to have at least something this year. DSL team's W/L is terrible, but at least they have a few hitters with OPS's above .700. That's a low bar, but the DSL stat sheet last year was a disaster. Pitching looks thin at both stops.

He's closer to LaStella than Peraza.

Mario Baez is the DSL revelation. Luis Guanipa has shown enough to keep the promise high.

The pitching has been … not good.

Drew Lugbauer is putting together a heck of a fun year in the minors... he was just promoted to AAA and hit a homer in his first game there. His numbers in AA this year:

.279/.385/.635
22 homers
58 RBI
.356 ISO (!)
.438 wOBA
159 wRC+

Granted he's still got a huge K-rate at 34.4% and is buoyed by a .368 BABIP

He's still had a fun year.

I think we need to see what Grissom could offer in LF, but he’s below average speed and arm strength so he’s have to have really good instincts to be a plus defender. If not then it’s going to be really hard for him to hit enough to be a valuable player which is hard to do if you’re not getting extra base hits.

I like Vaughn and I think he’s got big league skills. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have a defensive position.

Just not sure where Grissom fits with the Braves. Hard to see him unseat Arcia, Lopez seems to fit perfect as the UTIL infielder. Under control for 2 more years unless AA extends him which i'd think he'd look into. I dont know if he has the defensive instincts or arm to play LF. His best fit is probably trade bait, probably this winter while his value is high. For what, or for who, no idea.

He hasn't played catcher in a few years, and he now seems to be exclusively a first baseman. It's hard to imagine anything we need less in the short, medium and long-term future than a big left-handed first baseman with power who strikes out a lot. But it looked like he was on the brink of being out of baseball a couple years ago, so kudos to him for making some noise instead of fading away.

I certainly never insinuated we needed him.
