New Manager Discussion

Not even bothering to check on Schumaker’s interest is already mistake #1 of the offseason by AA.

So far AA has bungled the only possible decision he could have made (assuming Snits retirement really was his call), so he’s currently 0 for 1.

I think it means AA probably already knew like many of us had guessed that Schumaker was going to stay with the Rangers, since Young brought him in specifically to be groomed to be Bochy's successor.

And the fact that Schumaker's son is going to play baseball at a university an hour from Arlington... and it makes sense.

correct. I’m sure AA, and everyone else, knew what he was doing. Saying it’s some massive mistake is kinda silly.

I think AA and Snit did have a good relationship.

I think the last few years Snit knows AA gave him way more leeway to keep the manager job than other teams would have afforded with how talented the rosters were post-2021 and us falling short.

I think in private, AA gave Snit his professional opinion man to man that Snit wasn't the right man for the job anymore, and that the window of contention is currently in hte middle and he wants to get a younger manager that can take the team and core to new heights, and Snit genuinely felt he no longer could be that guy (whether he was to begin with is another story) so he stepped down for the organization and as a favor to Alex, who kept him employed probably longer than other teams would have kept around an old dinosaur like him. AA has never thrown Snit under the bus publicly at any point since he took over in 2018. The closest you can even come to saying that is when he said "Snit is gonna play his guys" when we were wondering why when we a deeper bench a few years ago, Snit wasn't utilizing it and giving other guys rest. Snit stepped down, but I'm sure he and AA had discussions about it for a while and AA gave him his honest shooter's opinion that will be kept in private forever. McGuirk being the guy to sort of announce the gifts and thanks to Snit and his wife tells me McGuirk was in the loop about it too, and did the PR to take away some of the conspiracies that Alex forced out Snit. Don't think Snit hates AA, and he has zero gain to go out shootin and bringing people down with him that were loyal to him for years. Reality is Snit was the oldest manager in the league after LaRussa and Dusty retired. Then Wash overtook him this season. It was handled correctly.

Don't think AA put on a show at the presser, they've worked together almost a decade and won a World Series together. AA was very very fond of Bobby. When AA came in as GM he said he and Bobby would go scouting and he learned so much from Bobby and was amazed at how sharp Bobby's observational skills were in judging young talent. Then Bobby had the stroke of course. But since Snit was a Bobby disciple as was Fredi, AA just paying respects to Bobby and Snit.

I really hope McGuirk gives him the freedom to go outside hte organization for the next manager.

We don't know that he didn't ask to talk to Schumaker. He may have been turned down by the Rangers or may have been informed that he was t interested in going anywhere but Texas. AA is a smart dude and I'm guessing he reached out.

A mistake doesn’t have to be massive to be a mistake. Not engaging Schumaker was a mistake, no matter where he ended up going.
I mean the point is we have no idea what intel he had and I think it’s pretty or extremely likely that the league knew Schumaker was staying with the org he already worked for that just so happened to have a managerial opening. But sure strike one if you really want lol

Pretty standard list of names -- pretty much the guys we've been discussing here. The exceptions are Ryan Flaherty (yes, that one) and Danny Lehmann, the Dodgers' bench coach.

A Dodgers bench coach would be great. The other names like DeRosa, Weiss, Perez, Ross, Gibbons aren't that exciting, so I'd like to see Lehmann or Lombard from that list.

This has nothing to do with his coaching, but I remember Ryan Flaherty sucking while he was here, and his brother in-law is one of the reasons we ended up with 10 years of Snitker, so he's out for me.

Lehmann is a new one on the list. I'd guess AA wants a new manager by the time the WS is over and before FA starts so he can fully concentrate on that. DeRosa's name is being talked about more but whoever is brought in needs to have some fire and energy to them.
