New Manager Discussion

Eddie shouldn't be our manager. We all love Eddie and what he's done for the org. But the FO should do what's best for the team and not have a sentimental hire to continue the Bobby lineage.

Everything right now is speculation, which makes this discussion kind of fun. It will probably be a couple days before we have a good idea who the candidates truly are

That just seems weird that MLB teams would be highly interested in hiring a college coach. How often does that happen? This isn't the NFL where scheme can matter a ton to a teams success. It's basically just filling out the lineup card, managing the SP and BP usage, making late game substitutions, and managing egos. That's a bit simplistic obviously and I'm not going to pretend that just anyone can do it, but I just don't see the appeal that a college coach brings that you don't get from someone like Schumaker, Baldelli, Melvin, etc.

Athletic mentioned Tony Vitello. He’s been linked to the Giants opening as well.
Can you imagine the gnashing of teeth if Vitello is the guy? Say goodbye to "The Braves Way" for sure. Shanks would have a stroke.

I personally look forward to the Daddy hat (New Era version) and pimp coat for every home run hitter. The team needs a little personality. Plus this gets Tony out of Knoxville, likely bringing their run to an end. Also sets him up to take over after Van Horn retires at Arkansas in a few years.

As a Florida fan who would love Vitello out of Tennessee, I have zero interest in giving a win-now roster to someone who hasn't worked a day in pro ball.

Vitello would definitely be that high energy guy but I'm not sure that would translate to grown men making millions. The kids love him bc he dances and cuts up with them and I'm a Tennessee fan so I hope he stays where he is.

I never watch college ball really but I am not against a college coach taking over. As long as he understands the new era of the game.

Given where the team is at in the window, I have to believe they will try to get someone with both experience managing a contender and an open-mindedness toward employing more strategies than simply having legible handwriting for filling out the line-up card. I just don't get the Ross love other than he is "one of us" (I'm a lifelong Minnesota so I probably should have written "one of you."). Cubs really did him wrong and I think the Keebler Elf is overrated as a manager, but I think there are better options.

In view of what I've written above, I think Davey Martinez is the closest match for the team. I can't believe that Melvin's odds are so low and that Molina's name is on the list at all. Last time I remember (at least in my inconsistent memory) a high-profile college head coach becoming a major league manager was when Bobby Winkles left a very successful Arizona State program he had led to become the Angel's third-base coach and subsequently their manager when Del Rice was fired mid-season a year later.
