Next Move?

I'm with you. I'm still baffled by the trade. The fact the Dodgers were willing to move a guy that they handed that contract to just a few months earlier should have set off warning bells. I'm seriously concerned that this guy isn't just going to fail to provide value equivalent to what we gave up for him, I'm afraid he's going to be just plain bad.

The hitter I saw in September looked to be overmatched in the majors. The fact he hasn't exactly lit up Puerto Rico is really discouraging. So not only do we have to be concerned with this guy's age, there are huge questions of ability and health. This guy was a real winner of a return.

I am cautiously optimistic about HO.. I assume the scouts had to see something.. But I agree, what I saw in September was someone who was lost. most of his hits where dribblers or dunks.. nothing really squared up. even his only Hr wasn't completely flush... So I wait, because I hope scouts saw something that some couch potato didn't see.

1. He's not a "kid" - he has little to no physical projection left; the ceiling upside is all in how he potentially translates those mechanics to MLB ball.

2. His PR performance leaves a lot to be desired. Having a penchant of squaring up a baseball does not correlate to multiple weak groundouts to SS or 2B.

3. If he is successful, he seems like he'd project to be a league average (or slightly above average) corner OF offensively (defense remains a question mark). That's hardly a player I would have parted ways with Wood and Peraza for.

4. I still hate the trade, so I readily admit it colors my assessment of Olivera. I'm rooting for him to make me eat crow.

This is the one trade Einstein made that had a hitter coming back as the focus. So even though he's hitting .235 in the Dominican League, he's playing with a torn UCL, they're playing him everywhere but his natural 2B position and he hasn't been healthy since about 2011, I weep with joy over Coppy's acknowledgement that he can't rotate 18 starters.

Trading Miller now means there is no intention of competing in 2017. Replacing him on the FA market is going to cost much more than just keeping him and signing a FA position player.

Interesting players obviously include Baez (tons of Ks) and Soler ( also tons of Ks, but we know the Braves LOVE Soler, probably on the level of how much they loved Olivera), but they also have a handful of top 100 guys:

Gleyber Torres, SS, top 30ish guy. Might look good paried up the middle with Albies 3-4 years from now.
Billy McKinney, OF, top 30ish guy. Fringe speed for CF, and fringe arm for RF. Can probably handle both decently though.
Carl Edwards Jr., RHP, top 60ish guy. Very slight build and has already moved to relief, probably not a good trade target.
Duane Underwood, RHP, top 75ish guy. Another TOR lottery ticket, wouldn't be shocked to see him acquired.
Albert Almora, OF, top 100ish guy. Pretty much MLB ready in CF, questions about offense. They might be using him in CF.

I wouldn't be at all shocked to see Miller traded for Soler and Underwood. That would be the minimum return I would take for Miller. Markakis would be the next to go to a team that can't afford Heyward/JUp/Cespedes/Gordon.

@mlbbowman: Cameron Maybin has been traded to the Tigers for LHPs Ian Krol and Gabe Speier. This deal will save the #Braves a little more than $6M

Here it is

Well, that's underwhelming, but it was always going to be. We should have traded him last year. I figured we might try to include him in another package as just sort of a cherry on top, but whatever.

Rosenthal says we're seriously pursuing O'Day and Thornton.

Braves have plenty of options for the bullpen.

Thornton as a 1-yr deal and flip at the deadline would be fine.

Dont see them getting in a bidding war for ODay.

Baez or Soler would have to be in a deal for one of the SP's.

Would venture more as well.

Not sure what it would cost to nab both of them.

Is there still a lot of value in Baez? Isn't this the guy that's come up and K'd like 50% of the time and not had much contact? Or is that another guy.

The trade still makes little to no sense. And Seitzer himself said he sees him as a 15-20 HR guy??? I thought we were expecting legit power here. This trade is turning into a disaster, even if Wood and Peraza don't pan out.

You're right, it would seem that trading Miller would be conceding to the fact that we won't be competitive by 2017. It would seem that if we were to trade him, it's because we know he's going to be expensive by the time we're competing. Also, might be the time now to sell high.

Get Soler and move Olivera back to 3b. I'd take Castro to if we had to. He wasn't bad after the break and the switch to 2b.

The Rockies just DFAed a bunch of guys, one of whom is Rex Brothers. Aside from sounding like the main character in a 40's detective serial, I've always liked him. He's had some success at the big league level and always struck out a bunch of guys. He was awful in 2014 and pretty bad in AAA this year, so he'd be a flier. But we're not in a position to look askance on lefties with a career 132 ERA+ and a 10.3 K/9.
