Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

In addition to RHP Alan Rangel, they added OF Travis Demeritte to the 40-man. Bit of a surprise on both. Both had good seasons, but both have been around awhile. Rangel's 2021 uptick could portend something new, but I think everyone knows what Demeritte brings to the table.

Surely Demeritte can give us at least what Arcia and/or Camargo would provide as a backup infielder.

You are exactly correct. Casual fans have allowed the excitement of a WS run influence their valuations of the players who played well for a week or so to make that championship possible.

The best of the bunch is unquestionably Soler, but even he is “just” a .350+ xwOBA bat with defensive limitations and major injury concerns early in his career. I’d take the over on his 2022 steamer projection of 1.6 WAR, but he’s probably looking at a reasonable deal for a low end impact bat.

I think a certain kind of GM might see the gamer in big situations and bump up a bid.

Not to mention he's slightly more famous so that might play to the fans a little more as a small move that feels like more.

But I doubt it's a major change in value.

Maybe, just maybe Soler returning to form over final three months might be a significant improvement.

Demeritte is pretty much an OF these days. His days of playing the IF extensively are a ways away in the rear view mirror. I'm not dumping on Demeritte. I just thought the move a bit odd.

They could technically sign FF and Bryant and use Pache in CF. Just depends if you want quality or quantity.

Surely you don't honestly believe that - especially after giving Morton and d'Arnaud $28 million.

Alex admitted publicly that payroll's going up, but be careful when thinking about what that might mean. It's impossible to imagine that extending Freeman isn't Priority One. It's more than reasonable to expect that costs you 6 years and $180 million. That alone bumps payroll $7.5 million regardless of who else is brought back. Acuna gets a $10 million raise and Morton another $5 million on top of that. Dansby and Fried get significant bumps as well. That's roughly a $30 million increase over what salaries were on Opening Day 2021 without knowing whether you have any (or all) of Ozuna's money to try and keep any of Soler/Rosario/Duvall/Pederson.

Not even close - only one of those three is capable of playing SS.

Adrianza can play SS. As could Ozzie in a pinch.

Neither Arcia nor Camargo can contribute enough with the bat to justify a roster spot. And Demeritte may not either. He has the appearance of a AAAA all-star.

Rodon and Gray some notable starters not to receive a QO and seem like prime AA targets. Also the Rockies are beyond terribly run.

I said they could not that they would.

How do you not offer Jon Gray a qualifying offer?

So the Rockies refused to trade him at the deadline, didn't give him a qualifying offer and, unless they pull off a miracle contract extension, will likely lose him for nothing?

He will go to Tampa or SF and become an ace.

Found this rather interesting too. There has to be something they're seeing in the StatCast numbers that we can't though - wish the numbers-guys here could get a look at them.

He was actually eligible for the Rule V Draft last winter, so it's hard to imagine it was just the K-Rate. His WHIP and BAA dropped, and only 3 of the 11 HRs he gave up came after July 17th - wonder if that signals he added a new pitch or something they'd had him working on finally took hold? In his last 4 starts in June he struck out 8 or 9 hitters, then he only had one start in July where he struck out less than 7.

I think the big difference between last year and this year is that I believe (and could be wrong) Rangel is a six-year minor league free agent this year and he wasn't last year. There's a considerable difference between those two situations. He was eligible for the Rule 5 last off-season, but he hadn't pitched above A-ball and would have had to remain on the drafting teams' 25-man (or be offered back to the Braves), which probably made him a longshot. If a six-year minor league free agent goes on a team's 40-man roster, he's governed by standard option rules whether that would have been the Braves or someone else.

Rangel didn't pitch anywhere in 2020, so his 2021 performace qualifies as some measure of surprise (at least to me). Could be a late-bloomer.

Not sure Tampa spends that much to get Gray. SF has a ton of money off the books, and a rotation need, can see that fit. Certainly was dumb to not give him a QO though from the Rockies.

Verlander didn't pitch in 2021 and Syndergaard threw two innings. A little surprised on Rodriguez and Iglesias, but maybe $18 million is a bargain these guys.

When I see Ray's name, I really have to laugh a bit. It's water under the bridge, but I can remember when some of us balked at Smyly's $11 MM contract. The retort was "Well, Robbie Ray got $8 MM from the Blue Jays, so the Braves got Smyly at a bargain rate." Ray's arm could fall off tomorrow and Smyly could end up being the 2022 Cy Young Award winner, but it's funny how things shake out. I don't think anyone thought Ray would have the season he ended up having.

Guys like Belt and Taylor are really going to be hurt by the QO.

Belt isnt going anywhere, he probably signs a short-term extension with SF. I agree on Taylor though. I think ERod, Thor, Verlander, Iglesias are most likely to accept the QO.

Rodon must be legitimately hurt. He was fantastic this year before ending the year with health problems.

On paper he is someone I would love, but I don’t have much appetite for guys with health problems.

AA goes for guys on 1 year deals. Gray is getting a big-time contract. Rodon is interesting though on a 1-yr pact.
