Official 2022 Offseason Moves Thread

We know that AA had talks with Verlander so it points to AA wanting another starter.

THat just means he is willing to add an impact starting pitcher.

That doesn't mean he wants to use resources for a back end type guy at the beginning of the season.

Can Grienke be a 2\3 if needed?

Guy was on fumes late last year.

Don't get the fascination with him at all.

Give me our collection of young high impact arms over this any day. Use the money on offense and just bludgeon teams into submission.

If Ozuna is any good this year the Braves are going to have a top 5 offense in the whole league easy.

Hasn’t even been 24 hours since the trade and people are already coming down with ex-Braveitis.

I’m a big Olson guy. Perfect world he’s .275 with 45 homers next year. If freeman goes to Toronto, he’ll put up 150 RBI with that line up

This isn't hard to understand.

Verlander is coming off TJ to at age 39 so it’s probably closer than you think. We are defending a WS title and with Morton being close to 40 and Fried having blister issues we need an innings eater veteran like Greinke.

Greinke's velocity took a huge drop last year I thought.

Verlander may lose a little velo but he was as big of an innings eater as you could find. Always had a rubber arm.

He did but he still had movement on his pitches and had good placement. Verlander has always been a velo guy and that goes down with age and of course TJ. I would of loved to have him but he would have cost more than Greinke too.

Verlander was still throwing high 90's before TJ. If he's throwing mid-90s there won't be issue because he still has great control and breaking stuff. If he's throwing high 80s low 90s then that is a big concern.

Greinke was throwing high 80s. That isn't good.

Here you go again, completely overrating Braves pitching prospects.

The Braves don’t have a collection of “young high impact arms”. What they do have is a bunch of young guys who might not even stick at the MLB level, much less impact anything at all, and 3 legit SPs who are collectively a bit more injury prone than typical SPs.

AA needs to get a SP who can eat innings with roughly MLB average effectiveness. He doesn’t have to be good enough to start a playoff game when the roster is at full strength, but he should be good enough to face 9-15 batters in October if needed.

How many wins would this upgrade provide the Braves over their readily available options and do you think that matters in whether they make the playoffs or not considering its almost a certainty they would be in the mix on one of the best starters at the deadline with the saved cash?

I would be ok with using our existing guys as the 5th starter. I think there is a decent chance out of like 7 options that you get a solid 5 plus long relief/spot start. Using them to fill two spots has me nervous.

I think AA will just wait until some veteran feels like the musical chairs may leave him without a spot and sign a cheap 1 year deal.

There are not a lot of guys out there. We do not have much to trade.

Could be zero extra wins. Could be several of a rash if injuries hits the club. This move is about limiting downside so the team can afford to rest guys to be ready to impact the playoffs. It’s literally the dodgers model of roster building.

Anyone who thinks the Braves are some juggernaut impervious to a sub-500 season are fooling themselves.

They will still be in the mix for impact SPs if they need one, though the farm is so bad now they may not have to ammo to get one anyways.

The idea of saved cash, one that you have trumpeted in the past, gives us leverage to assume a starter with a high dollar value while minimizing what we would have to give up.

Signing Grienke now does very little to move the win total and we should pray that he wouldn't make a postseason start.

Could the universal DH, be a game changer among 1b? I know half the league has had a DH for decades, but the data on the 1b aging curve is at least partially skewed by NL 1b that have been required to play everyday. Maybe 32-33 years old isn't as old as it used to be for 1b?

To be clear…you are now taking the position that impact SPs are given up for payroll relief at the deadline?
