Official 2023 Playoff Thread

I don't really understand the check pitcher's hands after the out is recorded. If he does get caught at that point, it should be a run for the other team or re-bat vs new pitcher

Contreras just posted a 5.4 win season for the princely sum of $739k. The Brewers took the Braves and As to the woodshed with that trade.

The fair counterpoint is that Milwaukee was uniquely positioned to remake Contreras into a very good defensive catcher. As much as I loved Contreras’ bat (and personality), I don’t think he becomes this good of a catcher with the Braves.

The just-as-fair complaint, meanwhile, is that the Braves don’t have that feather in their developmental hat. But the Brewers are pretty far&away the best-in-class at developing catchers.

Defensive catchers. Braves turn out slugging catchers like they have a create-a-player program.

I feel like the braves series should start Friday. The reward for getting a bye should be more beneficial imo. If it starts Friday and play Sunday, WC teams are without their best 2 starters till game 3; that's an advantage

It's all just random as hell. The Braves didn't lose last year because of off days. Their pitching was sick/hurt. The Astros had the same layoff and ran through the playoffs like a knife through butter.

They could probably do this if money didn't rule the day with how they made start time decisions on these games. Like, in that theoretical scenario if you're the Braves sitting there on Thursday night watching a Game 3, whoever won that game could dictate whether you're playing at 1:30 or 7:30 on Friday.

Go look at those scores in the first round. Astros had an all-time great pitching staff last year. Timing isn’t as important for pitchers.

They literally scored 8 runs in Game 1 and kept up a pretty decent scoring average even with a few days between each round. A couple low scoring games but it didn't seem to affect them all that much.

Sure, but my whole post was talking about defense. Contreras is an asset with the glove now, and he wasn’t with the Braves, nor was he likely to become one, despite solid athleticism. Brewers have the secret sauce recipe.

Yeah, it’s less about Murphy vs Contreras and more about the Brewers getting a cheap young star for essentially nothing.

That's the key point in all of the three-corner deal. I wrote last week that I thought MLB should take over the A's due to the gross mismanagement and full-blown tank-a-thon and the Contreras for Ruiz deal is one of the items at the center of my thinking. I think the A's/Braves side of the deal was fair value for both sides. The A's sent Contreras and Payamps to the Brewers for Ruiz. I've witnessed the commissioner stepping in and halting deals in the past and I can't believe that he let this one pass.

Another thing MLB needs to fix with this format are start times.. It is not right to have the same teams having day games everyday. The Rays are almost a 100 win team yet MLB makes it harder for them to sell playoff tickets by making them play midday on a weekday for 3 games, while Philly gets primetime slots to pack that crap ass stadium every night.
