Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

I basically agree that Anthopoulos is probably going to let some of the big timber fall before making a move for starting pitching. I worry a bit that he might paint himself into a corner like he has a couple of other off-seasons, but there are a lot of guys out there who are: (1) good, and (2) probably won't be getting a five- or six-year deal. It's been his pattern not to go long-term on pitching deals, so I would be surprised if he deviated from that. I think a reliable #3 will suffice.

With what we'd have to give up contract wise, plus draft wise for a player who gets the qualifying offer, i'd expect us to avoid those players. Here are some FA that were not eligible for the QO regardless:

Hyun-Jin Ryu
Marcus Stroman

Jason Heyward
Lasnce Lynn
Joc Pederson
AJ Pollock
David Robertson
Craig Kimbrel

Martin Perez
Will Smith
Justin Turner
Zack Greinke
Eduardo Rodriguez
Jordan Hicks
Tommy Pham
Lucas Giolito
Jack Flaherty
Aroldis Chapman
Jordan Montomgery
Harrison Bader

I highlighted the ones i'd be interested in. Coming off a season that was shortened by his TJS recovery, Ryu is the type of guy i'd expect....1 year prove it deal with a player AA probably has known from his Dodger days.

I think Fried’s health plays into it along with him being a west coast guy. I’m sure they’ve offered him several extensions and he’s dead set on becoming a FA. We know by now what that widths with AA. Fried is a goner.
I think you are correct. I think Fried is not coming back after next year. Right now the main priority should be starting pitcher. Nola, Snell or Gray.

Craig Counsell will manage next season, but NOT the Brewers or Mets, sources tell @TheAthletic. He is heading to a team with an existing manager.

Don't mind me, I'll just be over here dreaming of that "Snitker is retiring" announcement.

Well that was a fun 10 minutes of dreaming.

Counsell getting five-year contract from Cubs worth more than $40M, league sources tell
@TheAthletic
. Will be highest-paid manager.

Holy ****

Man, between today and the Joe Maddon-Rick Renteria swap, the Cubs have proven themselves utterly ruthless about the manager position.
